#24 Cortland Plays to Scoreless Draw at #3 Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, P.A. – The nationally-24th ranked Cortland women's soccer team put together a strong defensive performance on Sunday, holding nationally-third ranked Carnegie Mellon without a goal in a 0-0 draw on the road. It's the second time that Cortland has held a top-10 opponent scoreless this season. The Red Dragons moved to 2-1-2 on the year, while Carnegie Mellon is now 2-0-3.

Sophomore Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) had Cortland's lone shot on target in the contest, while freshmen Emma Frohne and Haley Loscalzo (East Northport/Commack) each had a shot attempt. Senior Kristen Spendal (Dumont, NJ) stopped all five shots in goal for her second shutout of the season.

Cecelia Dieterich recorded three of the Tartans' five shots on target, while Saveria Ulizzi and Audrey Bianco both had a shot on goal. Goalkeeper Abby O'Connor made one save for Carnegie Mellon.

The Tartans had a few strong chances in the opening 15 minutes, but Spendal was able to turn aside a pair of shots on goal. Dieterich also saw a shot attempt in the sixth minute hit the crossbar, before Spendal was able to pounce on the ball.

Cortland slowly began to gain more possession of the ball, and Vuotto registered a shot in the 19th minute, which was stopped by O'Connor. For the next 20 minutes, neither team registered a shot attempt, as the Red Dragons held firm in the back line and midfield.

Cortland had its best opportunity on the final kick of the half, as Emma Frohne saw her shot from the left side sail just left of the post with four seconds remaining. The teams entered halftime scoreless, with CMU holding a 2-1 edge in shots on target.

Five minutes into the second half, Spendal leapt to her left for a strong save to corral a header by CMU, keeping the Tartans off the board. Loscalzo had a shot just off to the left in the 62nd minute for Cortland, before the Tartans saw another shot hit the woodwork in the 64th minute.

In the final minutes, the Tartans pressed for a winner, but Spendal was able to stop one final shot attempt with just over five minutes remaining, and Cortland held off Carnegie Mellon in the final minutes.
