CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland women's golf team lost three closely contested matches during Day 1 of the Cortaca Cup versus Ithaca College.
The opening day on Friday at Elm Tree Golf Course featured three nine-hole, best-ball match play rounds, worth one point each in the three-day, 10-point scoring system. Ithaca won all three matches to take a 3-0 lead. Action continues Saturday at RaNic Golf Club in Ithaca with 18-hole stroke play, which will also count toward season statistics. The team winner Saturday earns a point and the team with the individual champion earns a point. The Cup concludes Sunday at the Cortland Country Club with 18-hole match play, with each of the five matchups worth a point. A total of 5.5 points is needed to win the Cup. The event and format is being played for the first time this year.
Friday's action featured two match play rounds with two golfers per team, with the best score by each team used to determine the hole winner. The third round featured just one golfer each since Cortland has only five golfers.
Pia Aguilar (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Highlands) and
Gina Milazzo (Greenwood Lake/Warwick Valley) lost their match 2 up, trailing by one hole before losing the ninth.
Kara Dumas (Jefferson/Gilboa-Conesville) and
Mimi Rienzo (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) lost 2&1, as did
Sophie Oristian (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) in the solo match.
