CORTLAND, N.Y. – Graduate student
Mateo Marra (Ossining) scored a pair of goals for Cortland, but visiting Scranton was able to tie the game with two goals in the final 20 minutes in a 2-2 draw for the nationally-10th ranked Cortland men's soccer team on Saturday night on Holloway Field. Cortland is now 6-1-2 on the year, while Scranton is 3-1-2.
Marra recorded his seventh and eighth goals of the year, while leading Cortland with five shots on goal.
Jordan Ott (Fort Worth, T.X/Southwest Christian) stopped two shots in goal for the Red Dragons.
Ciaran Corr and Tyler Colton each scored for the Royals, while Matt Capretto recorded an assist. Charlie Smith made four saves for Scranton.
Cortland had a 3-on-2 opportunity in the 15th minute after
Jordan Miller (Jericho) intercepted a pass and a Scranton defender slipped, but the Red Dragons were thwarted with an excellent block.
In the 20th minute, Corr appeared to score for Scranton off of a corner kick, but the goal was ruled out by the referee due to a foul on Scranton as Ott attempted to move to make the save.
In the 42nd minute,
Jack Pinnata (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage) had his shot cleared off the line by a Scranton defender to keep the game scoreless. Shortly after, Marra got Cortland on the board, dribbling around a defender and lifting a shot that appeared headed into the lower right corner of the net. The ball took a deflection off the head of a Scranton defender and into the goal to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Cortland doubled its advantage in the 73rd minute, as Marra was fouled in the penalty area, and calmly slotted his penalty kick into the left-center of the net.
The Royals pulled back to within a goal later in the 73rd minute, as the referee award a penalty kick to Scranton after a foul in the box. Corr went high and to the left on his penalty kick to score to give Scranton a way back into the game.
In the 87th minute,
Yasin Choukri (Wilton, CT) fed
Matt Shultz (Oneonta) with a through ball with a chance to re-establish Cortland's two-goal advantage, but Smith came off his line quickly and was able to stop Shultz's shot attempt.
One minute later, Colton tied the score, floating a shot from the left side over Ott's outstretched arms to knot the score at 2-2 with 2:16 remaining.
Neither team could find a winner in the finals minutes as the game ended level.
