Cortland Finishes 2-1 at Messiah Tourney After Win vs. Rowan, Loss to Gettysburg

GRANTHAM, PA. – Cortland finished 2-1 at the Messiah Women's Volleyball Invitational after splitting two matches in Saturday's action. The Red Dragons (9-3) opened the day with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-9 sweep of Rowan University before being swept by Gettysburg, 27-25, 25-21, 25-20.
 
Gettysburg (12-1), which lost to Cortland in last year's NCAA tournament opening round, finished with a 3-0 record at the tournament. Messiah was 1-2 and Rowan (5-6) was 0-3.
 
Against Rowan, Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) led the Red Dragons with 13 kills and just two errors in 23 attempts (.478 attack percentage). She also totaled eight digs. Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck) finished with eight kills and one error in 12 attacks (.583) and led the team with five blocks, three solo. Jennifer Koestner (Syosset) added nine kills, three aces and nine digs, and Anna Lynch (Rochester/Our Lady of Mercy) hit at a .750 clip with six kills and no errors in eight swings.
 
Mikenzie Martens (Carthage), who last weekend surpassed the career 1,000-dig mark, led the Red Dragons versus the Profs with 10 digs. Samantha Rodriguez (Camarillo, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) served a team-high four aces and dished out 11 assists and Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) had 24 assists.
 
Jena Kaul finished with eight kills and Brooke Adams had 18 assists for Rowan.
 
In the match versus Gettysburg, Pilkey led the team with 11 kills and Kira Pirrera (Hauppauge/Smithtown West), Koestner and Emma Reilly (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) finished with eight kills apiece. Reilly ended with a .636 attack percentage (one error in 11 attempt). Guedez totaled seven kills and one error in 14 attempts (.429) and led the Red Dragons with three blocks. Hinshaw finished with 26 assists and Rodriguez had 10 assists. Martens posted 21 digs and two aces and Koestner had 10 digs.
 
Alycen Radolovic led the Bullets with 12 kills and Mary Huegel finished with six blocks.
 
The first set featured 10 ties and four lead changes. Cortland rallied from a 24-21 deficit to tie the set and also fought off a set point at 25-24 before Gettysburg scored the final three points. The Bullets never trailed in the second set but were still up only 23-21 before tallying the last two points. Gettysburg used a 6-0 run to break a 16-16 tie in the third and led by at least three points after that.
