Pia Aguilar during Sunday's competition; she halved her match in the final group of the day
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland women's golf team earned two points in match play with a victory and two ties during the final day of the three-day Cortaca Cup. The last day was held in excellent weather conditions at the Cortland Country Club.
Ithaca won the Cup by a final score of 8-2. The Bombers were up 3-0 after Friday's nine-hole, best-ball match play at Elm Tree Golf Course and extended their lead with two points in stroke play Saturday at RaNic Golf Club in Ithaca by winning the team score and having the individual champ.
Gina Milazzo (Greenwood Lake/Warwick Valley) won her match versus Ithaca's Reanna DeCrow, 4&2. Ithaca earned wins from Madison Coffey, 4&2 versus
Kara Dumas (Jefferson/Gilboa-Conesville), and Helena Winterberg, 3&2 versus
Mimi Rienzo (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg).
The other two matches ended even after exciting finishes.
Sophie Oristian (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) trailed Ithaca's Annika Michel by one entering the 18th hole. Oristian chipped in from just off the green and then won the hole, and halved the match, when Michel's potential tying putt came up just short. In the final group of the day,
Pia Aguilar (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Highland) led Ithaca's Annelise Stencel by one entering the 18th. Aguilar's second shot went wide right into an adjoining fairway. Stencel's second shot was short of the green. Aguilar hit a great third shot to about 12 feet and Stencel chipped to within about seven feet. Aguilar's par putt came up just short and Stencel buried her par putt to win the hole and halve the match.
Cortland returns to action next Saturday and Sunday at the Williams College Championship in Massachusetts.
