Red Dragons Defeat Williams to Begin Play at Skidmore Classic

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team evened its season record at 2-2 with a three-set sweep over Williams College during the first day of the Skidmore College Classic. The Red Dragons defeated the Ephs 25-16, 26-24, 25-13.
 
Cortland continues action at the tournament Saturday with matches versus Brandeis at noon and the host Thoroughbreds at 4 p.m.
 
Jennifer Koestner (Syosset) led Cortland with 15 kills and added six digs, two aces and two blocks. Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck) finished with nine kills and four blocks and Emma Reilly (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) had five kills with no errors in 11 attempts and led the team with five blocks.
 
Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) and Kira Pirrera (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) each totaled seven kills. Pilkey also contributed seven digs, three blocks and two aces. Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) ended with 38 assists, Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) led the Red Dragons with 18 digs and Alyssa Rich (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) chipped in with eight digs.
 
Williams, which was playing its season opener, was led by Tatum Baker and Annaliese Fricke with seven kills apiece. Sidra Wohlwend recorded 14 digs.
 
Cortland finished with a .239 team attack percentage, including a .357 mark in the third set. The Red Dragons held Williams to a .040 attack percentage. The Ephs had a .000 percentage in each of the first two sets and a .143 mark in the third.
 
Cortland led most of the first set, taking control with a 6-1 run to extend a 12-8 lead to 18-9. The second set featured six ties and three lead changes. Williams led 13-9 before Cortland came back to tie it at 16-16. The Red Dragons eventually led 24-22 before the Ephs knotted the score on a Tatum kill and a block by Chi Obi and Keely Campuzano. Cortland, however, scored the final two points on a Koestner kill and a Williams attack error. Cortland pulled away from a 13-11 lead in the third set with an 8-1 run that featured two Koestner aces, a Reilly block and kills by Koestner, Reily, Pirrera, Pilkey and Guedez.
