WILLIAMSPORT, PA. – The Cortland wrestling team won one of its three matches during the opening day of the 16-team Budd Whitehill National Duals Friday at Lycoming College. The Red Dragons (4-5) will now compete for a possible ninth-place finish on Saturday after finishing 1-2 in Group B.
 
Cortland will face Lycoming in the Group 9-12 semifinals Saturday at 9 a.m. and will wrestle again at noon for either ninth or 11th place.
Cortland opened action Friday with a 40-17 loss to Wilkes University. The Red Dragons posted three wins in the match - a pin by Culley Bellino (Canastota) at 133 pounds, a 19-4 technical fall by Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) at 149 pounds and a pin by Robby Cunningham (Miller Place) at 184 pounds. Wilkes won six matches by pin and another by major decision.
 
The Red Dragons defeated York College of Pennsylvania, 33-19, in their next match. Cortland won six of the 10 bouts versus the Spartans, highlighted by five pins - Centrone at 149, Justin Klein (Miller Place) at 157, Jack Pickersgill (Holtsville/Sachem East) at 165, Cunningham at 184 and Bryson Tibbs (Middletown) at 197. Dom Vinci (Spencerport) earned a 5-3 win at 141 after forging a 4-3 lead in the first period.
 
Cortland closed the day with a 45-5 loss to nationally ninth-ranked Roanoke. Centrone posted the Red Dragons' lone win with a technical fall at 149. Roanoke's lineup included four nationally ranked wrestlers.
 
Centrone is currently ranked fifth nationally at 149 pounds and first in Region 2 by the NWCA. Bellino is ranked third in the region at 133, Vinci is ranked fifth regionally at 141 and Cunningham is ranked sixth regionally at 184.
