Austin Dials Long Distance Early and Often in 78-59 Win at Buffalo State

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Isaiah Austin (Albany) scored 21 points on seven 3-pointers, all in the first half, as Cortland took control early and defeated host Buffalo State, 78-59, in a SUNYAC men's basketball contest.
 
Cortland improved to 6-7 overall and 5-1 in the conference. The Red Dragons will play at defending league champion New Paltz Friday and at Oneonta Saturday.
 
Austin hit five treys in the first four minutes to account for Cortland's first 15 points and the Red Dragons led, 15-5. Joel Davis (Watertown) hit a 3-pointer a minute later to make it 18-5, and Austin's sixth triple of the game gave Cortland a 21-7 lead with 13:02 left in the half. Austin made his final 3-pointer with 2:48 left in the half, and the Red Dragons led 45-25 at the break. The lead was at least 15 points the entire second half.
 
Austin finished 7-of-11 from the 3-point arc and 7-of-13 overall. He also secured four rebounds. Davis posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds and led the Red Dragons with four assists. Kendall Arcuri (State Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) added 10 points and five rebounds, Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) totaled seven points and seven rebounds and Gaige Armbrewster (Oakfield/Oakfield-Alabama) had five rebounds.
 
Buffalo State (4-9, 2-4 SUNYAC) was led by Zee Johnson and Nate Severson with 13 points each. Oryan DeJesus scored 10 points and Maley McCurty pulled down seven rebounds.
 
Cortland shot 12-of-28 (43 percent) from 3-point range, including 10-of-21 in the first half. The Red Dragons finished at 49 percent overall from the floor. The host Bengals ended at 37 percent from the field overall and 42 percent (10-of-24) from the arc.
