Will Jones and Connor Carlile each scored a goal for the Mustangs, and Grant Linville made 41 saves in goal.
The teams played carefully in the opening minutes of the first period, without a shot on goal from either side in the first 3:30. Through ten minutes of play, the Red Dragons held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Cortland grabbed the lead with just over six minutes left in the period, as Settimo skated through multiple defenders on the way towards the Morrisville goal. The last defender before the goalie was able to poke the puck loose, but Hildreth ripped a wrist shot from the slot into the top corner for his second goal of the season. Humphrey was credited with the secondary assist.
Kyrkostas made it 2-0 for the Red Dragons just 1:01 later.
Joshua Rumolo (Brooklin, ON/Wellington Dukes) skated into the Morrisville defensive zone but had the puck knocked off his stick. Kyrkostas collected the puck and snapped a wrist shot through traffic into the back of the net. Rumolo's assist was also his first collegiate point.
The Red Dragons committed a tripping penalty late in the period, and Morrisville pulled to within a goal at the intermission after Jones scored a power-play goal from the right circle with under two minutes remaining.
Legault scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Red Dragons less than five minutes into the second period, finishing off a cross-ice pass from
Nate Berke (Williamsville/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) after Berke had a shot blocked near the right circle.
Morrisville once again pulled back to within a goal at 3-2 with 6:32 left in the period. After the Red Dragons won a defensive zone faceoff, the puck was stolen by the Mustangs, and eventually made its way out to just inside the right point, where Carlile blasted a shot past Mobley. Minutes later, Mobley made a strong save to maintain the Cortland advantage after a Cortland defender had slipped on a 1-on-1 opportunity for the Mustangs.
Humphrey re-established a two-goal advantage for Cortland off a double deflection with 12 seconds remaining in the period. Facchini took a shot from the left point, and Settimo initially tipped the puck, before Humphrey redirected it past Linville to make it 4-2.
Cortland added a pair of goals in the third period to secure the victory. Just past the midway point of the period, Hildreth pounced on a loose puck and slashed a shot into the corner of the net after Facchini's shot from the blue line was blocked up into the air by a defender. Seitz completed the scoring just 39 seconds later, netting his seventh goal of the year from in front after a feed from below the goal line by
Sam Christiano (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres).
