ELIZABETHTOWN, PA. – Four Cortland wrestlers earned top-six finishes, led by a runner-up finish from Cody Merwin (Walton) at 133 pounds, at the D. Kenneth Ober Invitational, hosted Saturday by Elizabethtown College.
 
Cortland finished seventh out of 10 teams at the tournament with 52 points. Roanoke was the team champion with 165.5 points.
 
In addition to Merwin's finish, Dom Vinci (Spencerport) and Rocco Futia (Wallkill) placed third and fifth, respectively, at 141 pounds, and Joseph Visciano (Smithtown/Smithtown East) finished sixth at 174 pounds.
 
Merwin went 3-1 at 133. He opened with a pin and a major decision, and he defeated Corey Cope of Elizabethtown in the semifinals, 4-1 in the first sudden-victory overtime period. Merwin lost 6-3 in the finals to Messiah's Mason Casey.
 
Vinci went 3-1 at 141 with two pins and a major decision. He won two matches before losing in the semifinals, but came back with a pin before being awarded third place by no contest over a wrestler who already had wrestled the maximum six matches allowed for the day.
 
Futia finished the day 4-2 with three pins and a technical fall. He won his first three bouts, two by pin and one by tech fall, to advance to the semifinals. After a loss, he dropped a decision in the consolation bracket before winning by pin in the fifth-place match.
 
Visciano posted a 3-3 record for his sixth-place finish at 174. He pinned his first opponent, lost his next match, and then won two decisions before losing his final two matches, including the fifth-place match.
 
Cortland will head to The College of New Jersey next Saturday for dual matches against Delaware Valley and the host Lions.
