Cortland Defeats Buffalo State, 71-53, to Maintain SUNYAC Lead

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) and Isaiah Austin (Albany) combined for 39 points as Cortland remained in first place in the SUNYAC men's basketball standings with a 71-53 win over visiting Buffalo State.
 
Cortland pushed its overall record to 9-8 and is 8-2 in the SUNYAC, a half game better than New Paltz (8-3).
 
Coston scored 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting, 3-of-6 from 3-point range, and led the Red Dragons with five assists. Austin connected on 7-of-12 shots, 4-of-9 from the 3-point arc, and ended with 19 points, five rebounds and three steals.
 
Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) finished with nine points and four rebounds. Kendrick Wilson (Wheatley Heights/Moravian Prep (NC)) ended the night with six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals and Joel Davis (Watertown) scored seven points on 3-of-3 shooting and blocked three shots. Gaige Armbrewster (Oakfield/Oakfield-Alabama) handed out four assists.
 
Buffalo State (5-12, 3-7 SUNYAC) was led by Zee Johnson, who scored 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range. Matt Parkinson and Christian Smallhorne each scored nine points and Maley McCurty led the Bengals with 10 rebounds.
 
Cortland shot 48 percent from the field, including 52 percent in the second half. The Red Dragons made 13-of-32 attempts from 3-point range (41 percent). Buffalo State ended at 34 percent from the floor overall and just 4-of-21 from the arc.
 
Cortland built a 19-8 lead eight minutes into the contest. The Bengals closed back to within 19-14 a few minutes later and trailed by seven, 23-16, with just under seven minutes left in the half. From that point, Cortland closed the half on a 13-3 run to lead 36-19 at halftime. The lead was at least 15 points the entire second half.
 
Cortland heads to Plattsburgh on Friday and Potsdam on Saturday for SUNYAC contests.
