Red Dragons Lose to Vassar in Middlebury Invitational Third-Place Game

MIDDLEBURY, VT. - Vassar's Shea Fitzgerald scored 34 points as the Brewers defeated Cortland, 89-75, in the third-place game of the Middlebury Invitational men's basketball tournament.
 
Joel Davis (Watertown) led Cortland (2-7) with 19 points and 10 rebounds and also recorded three assists and two steals. He made 8-of-14 shots from the field. Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea), who was named to the all-tournament team, finished with 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
 
Gaige Armbrewster (Oakfield/Oakfield-Alabama) made 4-of-5 3-pointers and scored a career-high 12 points. He was 4-for-4 from the arc in the second half. Jaylen Warmack (Utica/Utica Notre Dame) scored eight points and had five assists and two steals.
 
Fitzgerald was 8-for-15 from the field with two 3-pointers but did almost half of his scoring from the foul line, sinking 16-of-17 charity tosses. Avery Lee scored 15 points and Kreekor Karageuzian and Nathan Denham each hauled in seven rebounds for the Brewers (6-4).
 
Cortland led 18-12 with 10:40 left in the first half and held its final lead at 23-22 with 7:48 remaining. Vassar led 39-34 at halftime and built its lead to as high as 17 points at 55-38 with 14:18 left in the game.
 
Cortland fought back and got to within eight points at 66-58 on an Armbrewster trey with 7:16 left, but the Red Dragons were not able to draw any closer.
 
Cortland closed out the non-league portion of its schedule. The Red Dragons return to SUNYAC play Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Fredonia.
