Cortland Soars Past Morrisville, 8-0; Gemelli Ties School Single-Game Assist Record

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Seven players scored at least once and Gabriella Gemelli (Clinton) tied the school single-game record with four assists as the Cortland field hockey team defeated visiting Morrisville, 8-0, in a SUNYAC contest. The Red Dragons improved to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Kerrin Pettit (Saint James/Smithtown East) led Cortland with her first two collegiate goals and Ava Passante (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) finished with a goal and an assist. Sadie Hoffmann (Miller Place), Lillian Morse (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Adrienne Mayes (Vestal), Kaylee Hughen (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Boonton) and Madison Oliver (Holland Patent) each scored once, with Hoffmann and Hughen each netting their first collegiate goals.

Gemelli's four assists all came on direct shots by teammates off penalty corner insert passes. She tied the school record set by five previous players, most recently Passante versus Morrisville in 2022.

Cortland outshot the Mustangs, 46-2, and earned 27 penalty corners to two by the guests. Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) started in goal and did not have to make any saves in the first half. Sofia Cannistraci (Guilderland) recorded one save in the second half.

For Morrisville (2-6, 0-2 SUNYAC), Emmaly Noeller made 18 saves and Melissa Beaver and Morgen Archer each notched a defensive save.

Cortland used a first-quarter goal by Hoffman and a second-quarter tally by Morse, both set up by Gemelli penalty corner inserts, to take a 2-0 halftime lead. The Red Dragons scored twice 40 seconds apart early in the third quarter to go up 4-0, with Mayes scoring off a penalty corner from Gemelli and Passante knocking in a rebound after Archer's defensive save.

Hughen blasted home a penalty corner shot, set up by Gemelli, with 5:59 left in the third, and Pettit knocked in a rebound just over two minutes later, to extend the lead to 6-0. The Red Dragons closed the scoring in the fourth on Oliver's goal, off a crossing pass from Passante, and Pettit's second goal of the game, off a rebound.

Cortland travels to nationally 19th-ranked Franklin & Marshall for a non-league game Saturday at noon.
