CORTLAND, NY –
Josh Carroll (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) scored two goals, with
Sebastian Olego (Bedford Corners/Byram Hills) assisting on both goals for his first collegiate points, as the nationally 15th-ranked Cortland men's soccer team earned a 2-0 home win over Morrisville on Saturday afternoon on Holloway Field. Cortland improves to 10-1-4 (5-0-2 SUNYAC), while Morrisville drops to 5-6-3 (2-3-2 SUNYAC).
Prior to the contest, Cortland honored eight seniors from its team with a Senior Day celebration, including Carroll,
Jordan Ott (Fort Worth, TX/Southwest Christian),
Scott Schuyler (Cincinnatus),
Jordan Regis (New Rochelle),
Jairo Ulloa (Huntington Station/Huntington),
Nolan Weik (Dryden),
Aaron Moretta (Penicuik, Scotland/Beeslack Community), and assistant coach
Luke van Galen.
Carroll's two goals were his team-leading eighth and ninth goals of the season, and came on six shots on target. Olego now has two assists in just six games for Cortland. Ott supervised a scoreless 90 minutes in goal, as the Cortland backline, headed by
Dylan Pederson (Earlswood, England/Reigate) and Moretta did not allow a shot on target in the contest.
Ronaldo Fatolou made eight saves in goal for Morrisville.
Cortland nearly broke through for the opener in just the second minute, as a long throw in made its way to
Shay Daly (Elwood/John Glenn) in front of goal, but the sophomore's shot was saved well by a dive from Fatolou.
Carroll was denied twice on headers in the 14th and 17th minutes with lunging saves by Fatolou, one after a cross from the left down the end line by Schuyler and another from a cross by
Jake Hutter (Smithtown/Smithtown West).
The Red Dragons took the lead in the 19th minute following a free kick from a dangerous position. Daly sent a cross into the center of the 18-yard area, and Olego connected with the cross to send the ball goalbound. Fatolou was able to get a hand on the shot to redirect it off the crossbar, but Carroll was first to react to the rebound, firing a left-footed shot into the back of the net.
The game remained 1-0 into halftime, with the Cortland defense allowing only two shot attempts, both off target, in the half.
The Red Dragons added a second goal in the 53rd minute to gain complete control of the game. After Hutter and Carroll were each stopped in quick succession by Fatolou, the ball was swept out of play by a Morrisville defender for a Cortland corner kick. Olego curled an inswinging cross on the ensuing corner to the left post, where Carroll directed the ball into the goal with his chest.
The Mustangs registered their third and final shot attempt in the 54th minute, which was over the top of the crossbar.
Cortland nearly made it 3-0 in the 67th minute, as
Owen Brant (Loudonville/Shaker) sprinted down the left side of the field and sent a cross to the back post, but the Red Dragons were unable to make a solid connection to send the pass into the net.
The Red Dragons continued to press to add a third goal, but Fatolou made one final save in the 83rd minute, and two chances in the closing minutes sailed wide of the post to keep the score at 2-0.
