BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Cortland women's tennis team finished in second place at the SUNYAC tournament after falling to top-seeded New Paltz, 4-0, in the championship round Saturday at the Lane-Starke Tennis Club.
Cortland (7-7), seeded third in the tournament, earned its best conference finish since winning the 2005 league crown, and its best finish since the league tournament changed to a team-bracketed event in 2011. New Paltz (8-0) won its fourth straight league crown.
Mary Repass (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team. Her win at fifth singles in the semifinals versus Oswego gave Cortland a 4-3 win over the Lakers and a spot in the finals.
New Paltz opened with two doubles victories to earn a team point. Justine Stanejko and Sam Ostrander won 6-1 at first doubles and Nina Genzone and Angelica Gabriel won 6-0 at third doubles. The match at second doubles was unfinished after the Hawks clinched the doubles point.
New Paltz then won three singles matches to seal the win and the league title. Ostrander, the tournament MVP, won 6-1, 6-1 at second singles. Patrycja Filonik was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at fourth singles, and Lula Brown-Vann won 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles. The other three singles matches were unfinished.
