Cortland Wins at Oneonta, 5-2, to Secure SUNYAC Tournament Third Seed

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Cortland clinched a berth into next week's four-team SUNYAC women's tennis tournament with a 5-2 dual-match victory at Oneonta.
 
Cortland (6-5, 3-2 SUNYAC) will be the third seed in the tournament and will face second-seeded Oswego in the semifinals on Friday, Oct. 17, at 4 p.m. at the Lane-Starke Tennis Center in Binghamton. Top-seeded New Paltz will face fourth-seeded Plattsburgh in the opening match that day at 1 p.m., and the winners will meet for the title on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m.
 
Oneonta (4-6, 1-4 SUNYAC) took a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches, but Cortland came back to claim five of the six singles flights for the win. In doubles action, Taylor Plue and Dakota Jimenez won a thriller at second doubles over Cortland's Gabriella Stanley (Buffalo/Niagara-Wheatfield) and Alexandra Thut (Poughquag/Arlington), 7-6, with a 7-5 tiebreaker. Annika Cripe and Haley Peck won 6-2 at first doubles and Kiersten Rufrano and Ashley Giaviano won 6-3 at third doubles.
 
Cortland began its comeback with a 6-1, 6-1 win by Mary Repass (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) at fifth singles, followed by a 6-2, 6-4 victory by Olivia Kirch (Dexter/General Brown) at sixth singles to make it 2-1. Thut won 6-3, 6-1 at fourth singles, and Lisa Schulz (Mönchengladbach, Germany) provided the clinching point with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 win at first singles.
 
Christina Massoni (West Babylon) continued Cortland's run with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at second singles. Oneonta's singles point came at third singles, where Plue won the first set over Stanley, 7-6, with an 11-9 tiebreaker, and followed that with a 6-2 win in the second set.
 
Cortland closes its fall regular-season schedule this Friday, Oct. 10, with a non-league match at Alfred University in a make-up of a previously postponed contest. Cortland's match next week at Misericordia has been canceled.
