SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY –
Tori Peterson (Whitney Point) scored two fourth-quarter goals for the Red Dragons, and the Cortland field hockey team earned a 2-1 road win over Skidmore on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. Cortland improves to 7-10, while Skidmore drops to 9-10 on the year.
Peterson's goals were her second and third of the season.
Adrienne Mayes (Vestal) and
Anna McCarthy (Bay Shore) each contributed one assist.
Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) made five saves in goal for the Red Dragons.
Skidmore's goal was scored on a penalty stroke by Colby Paul. Nicole Sylvestri did not allow a goal over 52 minutes of game action. Allison Morgan made one save for the Thoroughbreds in the first 7+ minutes of play in the fourth quarter.
Each team registered nine shot attempts, with Skidmore holding a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The Thoroughbreds also had a 5-4 edge in penalty corners.
Cortland came out flying in the opening minutes of the first quarter, winning three penalty corners in the first five minutes. However, the Red Dragons had one shot blocked and another go wide of the goal.
Six minutes into the period, Morgan made her first save of the game on a shot by Abby Ezickson. That was the only shot on goal of the frame, as the game remained scoreless after one quarter.
The Thoroughbreds held Cortland without a shot on target in the second quarter as well, and Morgan was called into action to make three more saves and bring the game to halftime without a goal being scored.
In the final five minutes of the third quarter,
Madison Oliver (Holland Patent) registered the first shot on goal of the game for Cortland, but Sylvestri was able to make the save. In the final minute of the third quarter, Brooke Golden struck a shot off the post for Skidmore to send the game scoreless into the fourth quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, Peterson redirected a cross from the right side by Mayes into the back of the cage to give Cortland the 1-0 lead.
Just before the midway point of the frame, the Red Dragons doubled their lead. A shot by
Ava Passante (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) was saved by Allison Morgan. The rebound bounced out to McCarthy, who made a quick pass over to Peterson for another goal.
With just 16 seconds remaining in the game, the Thoroughbreds were awarded a penalty stroke, and Paul was able to deposit a shot into the bottom left corner of the cage to break up the shutout bid. However, the Red Dragons were able to retain the ball for the final seconds to secure the victory.
