Interview with Tom Blumenauer (by Liam Sample)

THE MATCHUP: Cortland travels to Ithaca for the annual Cortaca Jug rivalry game. The game has potential NCAA postseason implications for both teams. Cortland (8-1), ranked 14th nationally by the AFCA and 20th by D3football.com, is already guaranteed an NCAA berth after winning the Empire 8 for the fifth straight year, but the Red Dragons could end up anywhere from earning a bye and hosting an NCAA second-round game, to traveling for an NCAA first-round game, based on the Jug outcome.

And despite the game being a non-league contest, Ithaca (7-2) needs a win in order to have a shot to win the Liberty League title. The Bombers finished 6-1 in the conference. Union (6-0) and RPI (5-1) play on Saturday, and if RPI wins the league will finish in a three-way tie. Ithaca wins the tiebreaker if it beats Cortland, as the crucial tiebreaker is record versus teams at or above .500, including non-league games.

THE SERIES: Cortland and Ithaca are playing for the Cortaca Jug for the 66th time in 2025. The schools actually started playing in 1930 and have met every year since 1948, other than in 2020 when the season was canceled. Ithaca leads the overall series 43-36-3 and the Jug series 38-27. Ithaca's Jug series lead does not include the Bombers' 1988 NCAA playoff win over the Red Dragons.

In 1959, friends and team captains Tom Decker of Cortland and Dick Carmean of Ithaca originated the Cortaca Jug as the prize for the winner of the game between the schools located about 20 miles apart on Route 13. The original jug was purchased at a yard sale. Each year, the game's result is printed on the Jug. The first Jug ran out of room for scores in the mid-1980s, necessitating a second Jug. That Jug ran out of room for scores after the 2015 season and a third Jug was created to list the scores beginning in 2016. In 1991, Sports Illustrated referred to the Cortaca Jug game as "the biggest little game in the nation."

Two of the recent matchups between the teams drew the two largest crowds in Division III history. Ithaca won both of those games - a 32-20 decision at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in 2019 with a Division III attendance record of 45,161, and a 34-17 win at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx in 2022 with a crowd of 40,232. It was announced this week that the 2026 Cortaca Jug game will return to Yankee Stadium.

Cortland has won three of the last four meetings - a 28-27 victory at home in 2021, a 38-28 win at Ithaca in 2023, and a 28-17 victory at home last year. The 2021 and 2024 victories completed 10-0 regular seasons for the Red Dragons. Ithaca won three straight games in the series from 2017-19 and Cortland won seven straight from 2010-16, including matchups in 2015 and 2016 when both schools were members of the Empire 8. Ithaca joined the Liberty League in 2017. Cortland was a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference from 2000-14 and an independent before that. Cortland clinched the 2015 Empire 8 title with an 11-8 win at Ithaca.

In 2014, Cortland won at home over the Bombers, 23-20, in one of the most wild and memorable finishes in the rivalry's history. The Red Dragons trailed 20-17 and were lining up for a potential game-tying field goal with no timeouts left and the clock winding down. Holder Luke Hinton was late getting on the field, and he was actually looking back at the kicker when a low snap hit him in the leg. Hinton recovered, rolled to his left and threw the game-winning TD pass to Jon Mannix as time expired. The play was recognized as the nation's number-3 play on ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10 that evening.

Of the last 27 games in the series (1997-2024), 17 have been decided by eight points or less. In the previous 65 Cortaca Jug games, Cortland is 8-5 in games decided by 1-3 points and 11-7 in games decided by 4-8 points, but Ithaca is 9-5 when the margin is 9-16 points and 17-3 when a team wins by 17 or more.

CORTLAND CAPSULE: Cortland captured its fifth straight Empire 8 title with a 44-14 win over Brockport at home last Saturday. Mike Rescigno ran 18 times for 80 yards and two touchdowns and completed 9-of-14 passes for 100 yards and three scores. Ethan Gallo, Joe Iadevaio and Sam Cotton each caught a TD pass, and Gallo ran for 50 yards on 14 carries. Ravi Dass Jr. returned a punt 76 yards for a TD to cap the scoring.

Aidan Lochner finished with six tackles, an interception and two pass breakups, and Memphis Ferguson and Aden Wiser each had interceptions. Four Brockport turnovers led to Cortland TD drives of 14, 32, 42 and six yards.

Rescigno has completed 99-of-166 passes (59.6 percent) for 1,340 yards and 20 touchdowns and he's the team's leading rusher with 923 yards and 12 touchdowns on 129 carries. During one stretch of the season from Sept. 13 to Oct. 18, Rescigno ran for more than 100 yards in five straight games. Rescigno has thrown 10 interceptions this year, but five came during the first week of the season in the Red Dragons' lone loss, a home setback to Grove City. Over the last six games, Rescigno has thrown 19 touchdown passes with just three interceptions.

Ethan Gallo has run 117 times for 567 yards and nine touchdowns and has nine receptions, two for touchdowns, in eight games. Cortland features a balanced receiving corps with four players between 19 and 23 receptions. Cotton has 23 catches for 416 yards and four scores, Jayson Zeva has 23 receptions for 211 yards and three touchdowns, Jacques LaPrarie has 21 catches for 400 yards and a team-high six TDs, and Iadevaio has 19 receptions for 250 yards and five touchdowns.

Lochner is the team leader with 53 tackles, 26 solo. He has two interceptions, four pass breakups and three fumble recoveries. Matt Lotter has 45 tackles, an interception and two pass breakups, and Alessandro DeRosa has 40 tackles, a pick and three breakups. Nazair Jean-Lubin is the team leader with four interceptions and 10 breakups, and Wiser paces the team with 6.5 sacks.

Cole Callard is 48-for-48 on PAT kicks and has made six field goals in 10 tries, including 6-of-7 kicks from inside 40 yards. Gavin Dandrea averages 37.6 yards on 27 punts, with nine "inside the 20." Dass is the Division III national leader with 23.7 yards per punt return on 10 returns, including the touchdown last week, and he has seven of Cortland's 16 kickoff returns, averaging 16.7 yards per return. Tomaso Ramos averages 30.8 yards on five kick returns and Tyson Taylor averages 30 yards on four returns.

Tom Blumenauer is in his first season as Cortland's head coach. He came to Cortland from Franklin & Marshall, where he led the program to a combined 21-11 record, including an 11-8 mark in the competitive Centennial Conference, from 2022-24. The Diplomats won postseason bowl games versus Delaware Valley in 2024 and King's (Pa.) in 2023. Prior to F&M, "Coach Blu" served as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Williams College for six years from 2016-21, and his prior coaching stops include Bowdoin in 2015, Endicott in 2014 and St. Lawrence from 2010-13.

A 2007 Ithaca College graduate, Blumenauer played outside linebacker and free safety for the Bombers for two seasons from 2005-06. He was a two-time All-Empire 8 selection and was named to the 2006 Football Gazette All-East Region team. He's a native of Brentwood, N.Y., and was a football and wrestling standout at Brentwood High School.

A LOOK AT...ITHACA COLLEGE: Ithaca kept its Liberty League title hopes alive with a 24-23 win at RPI last weekend. Nicholas Lang caught eight passes for 201 yards and scored all three of the Bombers' touchdowns. Michael Reed threw two of those scoring passes and running back Chris Scully tossed the other one. Reed completed 16-of-24 passes for 202 yards and ran 22 times for 57 yards. Joe Spirra led Ithaca's defense with 15 tackles, 12 solo, and Marven Simeus finished with eight tackles, a forced fumble, a pass breakup and a blocked kick.

RPI trailed 24-17 before scoring on a blocked punt return for a touchdown with 1:53 left. The Engineers tried a fake PAT for a potential go-ahead 2-point conversion pass, but the throw failed. RPI got the ball back with 40 seconds left, but its final drive ended with a Marcus Boyle interception of a deep pass at the Ithaca 35-yard line.

Reed has taken over as Ithaca's starting quarterback the past two weeks. For the season he's 64-of-92 passing for 787 yards and seven touchdowns and three interceptions, and he's run for 357 yards on 72 carries. Matthew Parker is 93-of-143 passing for 1,066 yards and seven scores with three picks. Lang has 54 receptions for 811 yards and eight touchdowns, followed by Tian Murray with 32 catches for 479 yards and a score. Scully has run for 570 yards and five TDs on 127 carries.

Sam Tourangeau is the Bombers' leader with 79 tackles and he also has four pass breakups. Spirra has 75 tackles, two interceptions and five pass breakups. Henry Takacs leads the squad with 4.5 sacks and Andrew Mellis has seven pass breakups.

The Bombers have blocked four kicks this season - one each by Mellis, Tourangeau, Simeus and Cam Paquette. Caleb Wandell is 23-for-23 on PAT kicks and Andrew Rice has made all 10 of his PAT kicks. Wandell is 4-of-7 on field goals, including 2-of-4 from 40 or more yards. In addition, Wandell averages 40.6 yards on 25 punts. Boyle averages 10.5 yards on 20 punt returns and Anthony Mestre averages 25.7 yards on 16 kickoff returns.

Michael Toerper (pronounced Ter-per) is in his fourth season as Ithaca's head coach and has an overall record of 34-10 (.773). In his first season at the helm in 2022, Toerper guided the Bombers to a 12-1 record and the Liberty League title. Ithaca won two NCAA playoff games to advance to the national quarterfinals. He was named AFCA Region 1 and D3football.com Region 2 Coach of the Year, and his staff was named the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year. In 2023, the Bombers finished 9-3, won the Liberty League crown and advanced to the NCAA second round.

Toerper previously served as the Bombers' defensive coordinator for three seasons from 2017-19 before becoming the safeties coach at Division I Holy Cross for two seasons. He also was an assistant coach for seven years at Johns Hopkins University from 2010-16 and served one season as an assistant at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. A 2008 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Toerper played three seasons as a defensive back and special teams contributor for the Panthers, earning a scholarship after joining the team as a walk-on.

NOTEBOOK:

* Cortland extended its Empire 8 winning streak to 33 games, dating back to late in the 2019 season, with its win over Brockport last Saturday. The Red Dragons have been a member of the Empire 8 since 2015. The Red Dragons won the outright league title and NCAA automatic bid in 2021 (6-0), 2022 (6-0), 2023 (6-0), 2024 (7-0) and 2025 (7-0) and were co-champions in both 2015 and 2019, earning an NCAA bid in 2015. Cortland also finished second or tied for second in the league in 2017 and 2018.

* Cortland previously competed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) for 15 seasons from 2000-14, finishing in at least a tie for first place six times. Three current Empire 8 members - Cortland, Morrisville and Brockport - at one point played in the NJAC. Cortland, Morrisville and new addition Alfred State are affiliate members of the E8 in football only. Brockport moved from affiliate to full-time status in the league in 2024. Alfred, Hartwick, St. John Fisher and Utica also are full conference members. Hilbert was an Empire 8 member in 2024 but moved to the Liberty League in 2025.

* Mike Rescigno has rushed for 923 yards through nine games - the highest total by a Cortland quarterback in a single season. The previous record of 774 yards was set by Zac Boyes in 15 games in 2023.

* Cortland ranks eighth nationally in Division III in scoring defense at 11.3 points per game. The Red Dragons have allowed 14 points or less in each of their last eight games after losing its season opener, 31-14, to Grove City. Only two teams during that eight-game stretch have scored two touchdowns against the Red Dragons - Utica on Oct. 4 in a 28-13 Cortland win and Brockport last Saturday (Nov. 8) in a 44-14 Cortland victory.

* Cortland is tied for first nationally in Division III, along with Randolph-Macon, with 28 turnovers gained. The Red Dragons have intercepted 16 passes and have recovered 12 fumbles.

* Cortland is seventh nationally in Division III in red zone offense, scoring 45 out of 48 times (93.8 pct.) when reaching the opponent 20-yard line. The 45 scores included 39 touchdowns along with six field goals. Cortland also excels in stopping teams in the red zone - the Red Dragons are tied for seventh nationally in red zone defense, allowing scores just 57.1 percent of the time (12-of-21) with seven touchdowns and five field goals.

* Mike Rescigno became just the fourth Cortland player since 2011 to be responsible for six touchdowns in a game with his four TD passes and two rushing touchdowns on Oct. 18 versus Alfred. The other Red Dragons since 2011 to be responsible for at least six touchdowns in a game were:

Dan Pitcher at Brockport (64-43 Win on 11/5/11) - 5 TD passes, 2 TD rushes
Steven Ferreira vs. Hartwick (48-45 OT Win on 10/3/15) - 4 TD passes, 2 TD rushes
Zac Boyes at Morrisville (52-15 Win on 9/30/23) - 4 TD passes, 2 TD rushes

Rescigno has been responsible for five touchdowns in a game on two other occasions this fall - he threw five TD passes in a win at Alfred State and had three TD passes and two TD rushes in a home win over Brockport. The five TD passes at Alfred State tied a school single-game record, and Cortland's six total TD passes in that contest (including one by Craig Galea) tied a school single-game mark.

* Cortland's 20 sacks this season include 12 different players with at least a half sack. Aden Wiser's team-high 6.5 sacks this season include 2.5 in the opening week versus Grove City and three at Morrisville. The last Cortland player with at least 2.5 sacks in a game twice in the same season was Ben Nagle in 2007 (3.0 at Kean; 4.0 at home vs. Union in the ECAC Northeast Bowl).

* Ravi Dass Jr. returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdowns in last week's win over Brockport. The return was the second-longest in school history; the longest was Dass' 83-yard TD return at Randolph-Macon in the 2023 NCAA semifinals. In all, Dass has returned four punts for scores in three seasons as a Red Dragon - at home versus Alfred University and at Randolph-Macon in 2023, at Hilbert in 2024, and versus Brockport this season.

* Cortland is 6-5 all-time in overtime games, with the last a 32-26 home loss to Brockport in 2019. All 11 games were decided in the first extra session. Cortland and Ithaca have played two overtime games, with Cortland coming out on top both times - 37-30 at Ithaca in 2005 on a 8-yard TD pass from Alex Smith to Anthony Morat and 23-20 in Cortland in 2006 on a Matthew Mintz 40-yard field goal. Cortland's defense recorded interceptions in each of those overtimes with Stef Sair sealing the 2005 win and Bill Hauser picking off a pass to open the OT in 2006.

Cortland first-year head coach Tom Blumenauer played for Ithaca in both of those OT games; he recorded eight tackles, five solo, with a sack and had a pass breakup in the 2005 game, and had similar numbers in 2006 with eight tackles, five solo, including two for lost yardage.
