PLATTSBURGH, NY - Thierry Lizotte scored the game-winning goal 2:29 into overtime to lift host Plattsburgh to a 3-2 victory over the Cortland men's hockey team in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday evening. Cortland drops to 4-3-1 (2-1-1 SUNYAC), while Plattsburgh improves to 3-3-0 (1-3-0 SUNYAC).
Morley Phillips (Raleigh, NC/Amarillo Wranglers) netted his first collegiate goal, while
Garrett Krieger (Skaneateles/Utica Jr. Comets) scored his third goal of the year for Cortland.
JC Humphreys (Canonsburg, PA/Rochester Jr. Americans) andÂ
Matthew DeSpirt (Hamburg/Northeast Generals) each added an assist.
Shane Shelest (Pointe-Claire, QC/Wellington Dukes) made 25 saves for Cortland.
Lizotte and Jake Sacratini each had a goal and an assist for Plattsburgh, while Lonan Bulger also scored for the Cardinals. Beau Lane stopped 29 shots to earn the victory in goal for the Cardinals.Â
Sacratini opened the scoring for Plattsburgh on a 3-on-2 rush for the Cardinals just over five minutes into the first period, firing a one-time over the glove of Shelest and into the top right corner of the net.Â
Shortly after, the Cardinals had a chance to double their lead on the power play, but Shelest made a pair of saves to keep the game at 1-0.Â
Cortland had its own extra-man opportunity late in the period after a roughing penalty, but the Plattsburgh defense held the Red Dragons without a shot on goal during the power play.
Cortland held an 8-7 edge in shots on goal in the period, but the Cardinals maintained the 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Cortland netted a pair of goals in the second period to take the lead. After a shot by the Cardinals went wide of the goal, Phillips collected the puck in his own defensive zone, skated down the right side, and ripped a shot low and into the left corner to equalize.Â
Just over two minutes later, Krieger gave Cortland a 2-1 lead off a deflection in front of goal. After a poke check by a Plattsburgh defender, Humphreys collected the puck and passed to DeSpirt at the left point. The sophomore fired a wrist shot that was redirected by Krieger past Lane for the goal.Â
Cortland couldn't extend its lead on 1:12 of a 5-on-3 power play late in the period after Lane made two strong saves. Shelest also had to come up with a tremendous save on Spencer Bellina after Bellina was sprung on a partial breakaway coming out of the penalty box.
The Red Dragons dominated possession in the second period and had 16 shots on goal to Plattsburgh's three shots on goal in the period.Â
The Cardinals tied the game less than a minute into the third period when Bulger tapped home a shot at the left post after a feed from Sacratini.
Plattsburgh had the lone power play of the third period after a tripping penalty on the Red Dragons. Shelest came up with five saves on the penalty kill to keep the game even. Shelest also made a huge save in the final five minutes of the third period on a shot by Bellina to send the game to overtime.  Â
Just over a minute into the 3-on-3 overtime period, Shelest made a strong save to deny Vlad Pshenichnikov at close range.Â
Just a minute later, the Cardinals found the winner on a 2-on-1 break, as Shelest stopped two initial shots, but Lizotte tapped in a rebound on the third attempt to give Plattsburgh the victory.Â
