#9 Cortland's Season Ends on Penalty Kicks Against #2 Augsburg in NCAA Sweet 16

ST. LOUIS, MO - Nationally second-ranked Augsburg advanced on penalty kicks, 6-5, after a 2-2 tie against the nationally ninth-ranked Cortland men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in the third round of the NCAA Division III playoffs at Washington University.

Cortland finishes the season with a 14-1-6 record, while Augsburg is 18-2-3 and moves onto the "Elite 8" to face Trinity (Texas), who defeated host WashU by a 3-0 scoreline in Saturday's other third-round contest.

Josh Carroll (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) scored both of Cortland's goals, while Jake Hutter (Smithtown/Smithtown West) registered an assist for the Red Dragons. Jordan Ott (Fort Worth, TX/Southwest Christian) made six saves for Cortland.

Carver Tierney scored both of Augsburg's goals, and Diego Veit provided an assist for the Auggies. Christian Hodges stopped five shots in goal for Augsburg.

Cortland registered the first shot on goal of the contest in the 14th minute, as Carroll had his shot from the left side turned aside for a corner kick by Hodges.

With 13 minutes remaining until halftime, Augsburg had a header following a free kick ring off the left post and back into play. Right before halftime, Cortland had a corner kick but was unable to convert as the clock ran out before anyone was able to connect with the cross on the corner.

In the 49th minute, Carroll gave Cortland the lead with his second goal of the national tournament. Sebastian Olego (Bedford Corners/Byram Hills) sprung Hutter with a pass down the left sideline. Hutter then cross towards the middle, where Carroll connected with a left-footed shot into the top left corner of the net for his 13th goal of the season.

Minutes later, Alberto Reyes (New Canaan, CT) struck the crossbar with a shot from distance, and Owen Brant (Loudonville/Shaker) saw his header go wide of the right post shortly after to keep the game at 1-0.

Augsburg tallied the equalizer in the 70th minute from a shot outside the 18-yard area from Tierney that snuck inside the left post.

The Auggies took the lead in the 80th minute off a set piece, as Tierney headed home a cross into the right side of the goal off a cross from Veit.

Cortland responded to tie the game in the 82nd minute as the result of a strong press by Carroll. After Carroll's initial shot was stopped by Hodges, the Augsburg keeper attempted to waste time instead of collecting the ball. Carroll alertly sprinted to steal the ball just inside the penalty area, and was fouled by Hodges for a penalty kick. Carroll calmly slotted the spot kick into the back of the net to tie the game.

Neither team was able to score a winning goa, with Ott making a diving save to his left in the 87th minute on a free kick to send the game to a sudden-victory overtime period.

Hodges made two saves to deny Carroll in the opening three minutes of the first overtime, and Ott stopped Veit on Augsburg's only attempt on target in the extra period. There were no shots on target in the second overtime period, as the game headed to penalty kicks to decide the advancing team.

Ott made a save on Augsburg's opening penalty kick, and Dylan Pederson (Earlswood, England/Reigate) and Olego scored on Cortland's first two attempts to give the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead after two rounds. After Augsburg scored its third attempt, Hodges made a save on Cortland's third attempt to even the shoot after three rounds. Both teams scored in the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds, with conversions by Reyes, Carroll, and Jairo Ulloa (Huntington/Huntington Station). Ott looked to have made a save on Augsburg's sixth attempt, but the assistant referee ruled that he had come off his line early and gave the Auggies a re-take, which was converted. Augsburg scored in the seventh round, and Hodges made a save on Cortland's attempt to send the Auggies to the NCAA quarterfinals.
