Rochester Pulls Away in Final Minute to Defeat Cortland, 74-69, in Season Opener

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Corvin Oprea and Tomiwa Adetosoye each scored 20 points as host Rochester defeated Cortland, 74-69, in the men's basketball season opener for both teams.
 
Joel Davis (Watertown) led Cortland with 19 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. Xavier Leveille (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee), in his collegiate debut, netted 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Kendrick Wilson (Wheatley Heights/Moravian Prep (NC)) and Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) each scored 10 points. Coston and Isaiah Austin (Albany) handed out three assists each and Coston also totaled three steals.
 
Adetosoye led Rochester with six assists and Oprea paced the hosts with six rebounds.
 
Rochester held its largest lead of the night at 66-59 with 4:12 left after two Sam Henderson free throws. Cortland, however, fought back and eventually tied the game at 69-69 on an Austin 3-pointer with 1:15 left. Adetosoye gave the lead back to Rochester with two foul shots with 53 ticks left. Cortland turned the ball over on its next possession and Henderson made the second of two foul shots with 37 seconds left to push the Rochester lead to 72-69.
 
Cortland missed a potential tying 3-pointer on its next possession. Henderson grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made the first of two free throws. He missed the second, but John Mayhew grabbed the offensive rebound, was fouled, and made one of two foul shots with 13 seconds left to create the final score.
 
Cortland will host Ithaca next Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
