Brady Hildreth (Lockport/New Jersey Titans) tied the game with under four minutes remaining in the third period, and
Conor Humphrey (Penfield/Rochester Jr. Americans) scored a short-handed goal for the game winner 2:21 into overtime, as the Cortland men's hockey team won, 4-3 at Manhattanville, in its first road contest of the season. Cortland improves to 2-1, while Manhattanville is now 0-2.
Sam Christiano (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) netted a pair of goals for the Red Dragons, his second and third goals of the season. Hildreth and Humphrey each scored their first goal of the year.
Justin Legault (Oakville, ON/Burlington Cougars) contributed two assists.
Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Ray, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) moved to 2-0 on the year in goal, stopping 19 shots in goal for Cortland.
Tristan D'Elia, Jack Roberts, and Corey Popowcer each scored a goal for Manhattanville, and six different players recorded an assist. William Billequey made 38 saves in goal for the Valiants.
The Red Dragons went on the penalty kill just four minutes into the game after a hooking penalty, but Cortland was able to kill off the penalty thanks to a pair of strong saves by Mobley.
Cortland's best opportunity of the opening frame came midway through the period, when
Garrett Krieger (Skaneateles/Utica Jr. Comets) was denied at close range by an excellent blocker save by Billequey.
The Red Dragons held a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal during the first period, but both goaltenders would not be beaten to keep the game scoreless into the first intermission.
The Valiants took a penalty for roughing only 20 seconds into the second period, but the Red Dragons were unable to capitalize on the extra-man opportunity, instead committing a pair of penalties and giving Manhattanville a 5-on-3. The Valiants took advantage of the extra skaters to score a power-play goal by Popowcer and take a 1-0 lead.
Cortland scored its own power-play goal to tie the game with over five minutes remaining in the second period. Christiano rifled a shot from just above the left faceoff circle into the top corner, with assists from Legault and
Colby Seitz (Eden/Corpus Christi Ice Rays).
Roberts scored in the final minute of play in the period to give the Valiants a 2-1 lead at the second intermission, despite the Red Dragons holding a 20-17 edge in shots through two periods.
Early in the third period, D'Elia scored to give Manhattanville a 3-1 lead with under 17 minutes remaining in regulation.
Manhattanville committed another penalty for slashing five minutes into the period, and although the Red Dragons didn't officially record a power-play goal, Christiano netted his second goal of the game only six seconds after the expiration of the penalty, assisted by Legault and
Nathan Garnier (Laval, QC/Cornwall Colts).
Cortland pressed to score an equalizer, and was rewarded in the final minutes. After
Andrew Clouden's (Hamburg/Seacoast Spartans) initial shot went wide, Hildreth was in great position to tuck a shot into the net and send the game into overtime.
Early in the 3-on-3 overtime period, Cortland committed a hooking penalty to give Manhattanville a massive advantage in the extra period. However, Humphrey was able to win a faceoff to begin the penalty kill, and then netted an unassisted goal for the short-handed winner.
