Volleyball Splits Two Matches to Close Regular-Season Schedule

GENEVA, N.Y. - Cortland completed its women's volleyball regular-season schedule by splitting a pair of non-league matches hosted by William Smith College. The Red Dragons (22-7) defeated Brandeis University in four sets before losing to the host Herons, also in four sets.

Cortland will host the SUNYAC tournament semifinals and finals Nov. 14-15. The top-seeded Red Dragons will face either Fredonia or Buffalo State in the semifinals Friday at 4 p.m., while Oswego will play either New Paltz or Morrisville Friday at 6:30 p.m. The championship match will be held Saturday at 4 p.m.

Cortland lost the first set versus Brandeis, 25-22, but came back to win the next three sets, 25-14, 25-16, 25-21. Kira Pirrera (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) led Cortland with 17 kills and just four errors in 30 attempts for a .433 attack percentage. She also totaled 10 digs, three blocks and three of Cortland's 14 aces. Lauren Millspaugh (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) and Emalee Ballou (Eden) each finished with 10 kills. Brandeis finished the first set on a 4-1 run to break a 21-21 tie. Cortland took control of the second set with a 14-2 run to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 20-10 lead. The Red Dragons led 17-14 in the third before scoring five straight points, and Cortland scored the first six points of the fourth and never trailed, although the Judges were still within two at 22-20 before a match-ending 3-1 run by Cortland.

Against William Smith, the Red Dragons lost the first set, 25-15, but bounced back for a 25-20 win in the second. The Herons regained control with a 25-20 win in the third. Cortland looked like it might force a fifth set after taking an early 9-4 lead and being up 21-16, but the hosts scored nine of the set's last 11 points to pull out the win.

Pirrera finished with 15 kills and three aces, Millspaugh had eight kills and four blocks, O'Connor dished out 16 assists, notched 11 digs and served three aces, and Kayla Wasserman (Minisink/Minisink Valley) finished with 15 assists for the Red Dragons.
