Rocco Futia finished 4-0 at 141 pounds with a pin, technical fall and major decision
ELIZABETHTOWN, PA. –
Rocco Futia (Wallkill) won the 141-pound title and six other Red Dragons earned top-six finishes at the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic on Saturday.
Futia opened up at 141 pounds with a major decision, followed by a technical fall. He pinned Ashton Romberg of Wilkes in the semifinals, and he completed a 4-0 day with a 14-8 win over Ryan Santiago of Wilkes in the title match.
Culley Bellino (Canastota) finished fourth at 141 with a 2-2 record. He opened with two pins before losing to Santiago by pin in the semifinals. Bellino medically forfeited the third-place match.
Colton Havens (Canisteo/Canisteo-Greenwood) finished 3-1 with two pins and a technical fall to place fourth at 157 pounds, and
Nicholas Rose (Lindenhurst) finished fourth at 197 pounds with a 2-2 record, including a pin.
Joseph Visciano (Smithtown/Smithtown East) and
Luke Chernaski (Merrick/Kellenberg Memorial) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, at 174 pounds. Visciano went 5-1 with two pins and Chernaski was 3-1 with a pin. Visciano officially won by forfeit over Chernaski in the fifth-place match.
David Ensminger (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) posted a 4-2 record to finish sixth at 149 pounds. He wins included a pin and a major decision.
Highlights for Cortland's non-placers included
Christian Paredes (East Moriches/Connetquot) going 3-2 with two pins at 165 pounds, and four Red Dragons finishing with 2-2 records -
Wyatt Gentzel (Bellport) at 125 pounds,
Neil Paulercio (Valhalla) at 141 pounds,
Justin Klein (Miller Place) at 165 pounds, and
Jack Pickersgill (Holtsville/Sachem East) at 174 pounds.
The Red Dragons finished seventh of 10 in the team standings with 94 points. Host school Elizabethtown finished first with 181.5 points, followed by Wilkes with 152.5 points.
Cortland returns to action on Jan. 3 at the Williams Open in Massachusetts.
