Cortland Grabs Lead Late in 59-54 Win at Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. - Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with less than 40 seconds remaining as Cortland defeated host Potsdam, 59-54, in a SUNYAC men's basketball matchup.

Cortland improved to 10-9 overall and remains in second place in the SUNYAC standings with a 9-3 record. Potsdam fell to 4-15 overall and 4-8 in the league.

Coston finished with a game-high 21 points, 17 in the second half. He made 9-of-14 shots from the floor. Joel Davis (Watertown) recorded a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds, Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) ended with nine points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Gerrad Beaubrun (Baldwin) totaled six points and six rebounds.

Nicholas Cortez led Potsdam with 20 points and Mohammad Sylla finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.

Potsdam led 50-45 with five minutes left following a Sylla layup, but Cortland tied the game with five straight points from Coston on a traditional 3-point play and a layup. The Bears regained the lead at 52-50 on two Sylla free throws with 2:50 left and Cortland tied the game again when Davis converted a layup off an Arcuri feed with 1:53 left.

Potsdam took its final lead at 54-52 on Parker Kelly's layup with 57 seconds left. Cortland missed a layup on its next possession, but Beaubrun grabbed the offensive rebounds and kicked out the ball to Coston at the top of the key for the go-ahead 3-pointer. Potsdam missed a layup with 25 seconds left and Cortland briefly controlled the rebound before being tied up, with the arrow favoring Potsdam.

The Bears missed a contested driving layup with 15 seconds left. Davis grabbed the rebound, was fouled and sank two free throws to give Cortland a 3-point lead. Potsdam missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with seven seconds left and Beaubrun sealed the win by hitting both ends of a 1-and-1.

Cortland will host Fredonia Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in a make-up of a game from Jan. 21.
