BUFFALO, N.Y. – Cortland's
Makiah Poli (Cortland/Home schooled) broke a 27-year-old school record in the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of
Dom Fratto (Waterloo/Geneva),
Jack Clark (Rochester/Aquinas Institute),
Dylan Anselment (Glens Falls) and
Hunter Sugrue-Neuendorf (Valley Cottage/Nyack) earned a title during the first full day of competition at the 2025 State University of New York Athletic Conference-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (SUNYAC-AMCC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championship.
The championship, held at the Burt Flickinger Center on the campus of Erie Community College, is the first-ever combined SUNYAC and AMCC Championship. Ten teams are competing - six from the SUNYAC (Cortland, Fredonia, Oneonta, Oswego, New Paltz and Potsdam) and four from the AMCC (Alfred State, Pitt Bradford, Penn St. Altoona and Penn St. Behrend). Competition will continue on Friday and Saturday.
Cortland currently leads the team scoring with 334 points, followed by Penn St. Behrend (255), Oswego (165.4), Oneonta (161) and Penn St. Altoona (152) in the top five.
Poli finished second in the 200 IM in 1:53.89, breaking the previous school record of 1:54.29 set by Kevin Crossman in 1998.
Fratto, Clark, Anselment and Sugrue-Neuendorf won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:23.62. On Wednesday, the 200-yard medley relay of Fratto, Sugrue-Neuendorf,
Kellen Dickman (Montgomery/Valley Central) and Anselment finished second in 1:32.93, and the 800-yard freestyle relay unit of
Dylan Monaco (Lynbrook), Clark,
Sean Zupko (Montgomery/Valley Central) and
Mason Rowlands (Campbell Hall/Washingtonville) finished second in 7:01.16.
Kevin Kohlhoff (West Islip) finished second in 1-meter diving with a score of 490.90 points, followed by
Kazuki Kadota-Browner (Jericho) in third (482.70) and
Alex Hilldale (Binghamton/Chenango Valley) in fourth (412.25).
Zupko placed third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:43.15),
Ayden Baxter (Marlboro) was fifth in the event (4:47.38), Rowlands finished sixth (4:48.23) and Monaco was seventh (4:49.86). In the 50-yard freestyle, Clark finished fifth (21.47, 21.40 prelims) and Anselment was eighth (21.77, 21.53 prelims).
Dickman won the "B" final in the 200 IM (1:58.29) to finish ninth overall. Sugrue-Neuendorf and Fratto tied for first in the 50 freestyle "B" final, each in 21.47 seconds, to share ninth place in the event.
Cortland's other individual scorers on Thursday included:
Patrick Kivlehan (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) in the 500 freestyle (11th place, 4:57.24);
Nick Dambra (Brockport) in the 200 IM (11th place, 2:01.00, 2:00.71 prelims);
Conner Utter (Manassas, VA/Patriot) in the 200 IM (12th place, 2:01.68, 2:01.54 prelims);
Zack Kreiley (Dansville) in the 500 freestyle (15th place, 5:00.47); and
Lucas Gannon (Schenectady/Mohonasen) in the 500 freestyle (16th place, 5:03.94).
Unlike past years in the SUNYAC Championships, teams are allowed this year to enter "B" relay teams that can score points, but not finish ahead of any "A" relays. Cortland's scoring "B" relays included:
800-yard freestyle relay - Dambra, Utter, Kivlehan, Baxter - 10th place, 7:11.75 (6th-best time overall)
200-yard freestyle relay - Dickman, Rowlands,
Trent deHaan (Greene/Greene Central), Dambra - 11th place, 1:27.06 (5th-best time overall)
200-yard medley relay - Poli, Kreiley, Monaco, Rowlands - 12th place, 1:35.92 (8th-best time overall)
