Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

#11/12 Cortland Falls 4-3 to Plattsburgh in Overtime in SUNYAC Semifinals

CORTLAND, NY – Aaron Catron tied the game with 4.2 seconds remaining in regulation, and Jake Sacratini netted the game-winning goal 20 seconds into overtime, as fourth-seeded Plattsburgh overcame a three-goal third period deficit for a 4-3 overtime victory over the Cortland men's hockey team on Saturday evening. Cortland falls to 19-7 on the year, while Plattsburgh improves to 16-10-1, and advances to face Oswego in the SUNYAC Finals next Saturday.

Three different players scored for the Red Dragons, including Anthony Bernardo (Hauppauge/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders), Brady Hildreth (Lockport/New Jersey Titans), and Nate Berke (Williamsville/Buffalo Jr. Sabres). Ronan Mobley (Playa Del Ray, CA/New Hampshire Avalanche) stopped 30 shots in goal for the Red Dragons.

Sacratini had a goal and an assist to lead the Cardinals, while Jacob Hearne stopped 29 shots in goal for Plattsburgh.

Bernardo got the scoring started for the Red Dragons just over five minutes into the opening period, taking a feed from Charlie Merkley (Fairport/Corpus Christi Ice Rays) and depositing a wrist shot from the right circle into the top corner of the net. Evan Beaudry (Mississauga, ON/Kemptville 73's) was credited with the secondary assist on the goal.

Cortland doubled its advantage in the final minute of the period, as Hildreth deflected a shot from the point by Nate Boak (Canton/El Paso Rhinos) into the right side of the net. Cortland outshot Plattsburgh 15-7 in the period.

Neither team was able to score in the second period, as Plattsburgh fired seven shots on goal, but Mobley stopped all of them. Meanwhile, the Red Dragons had nine shots on goal, but were unable to beat Hearne in the period as the game stayed 2-0 into the second intermission.

Cortland made it 3-0 just 2:08 into the third period, as Berke took a feed from Justin Legault (Oakville, ON/Burlington Cougars), and snuck a shot from the left circle past Hearne. Sam Christiano (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) tallied the secondary assist on the goal.

The Cardinals pulled to within 3-1 with a power-play goal with 8:40 left in the third period. Cortland also committed a tripping penalty that was enforced after the goal was scored.

Plattsburgh was able to score another goal shortly after the expiration of the Cortland penalty, as Vlad Psenichnikov made it 3-2 with over six minutes remaining.

Plattsburgh pulled Hearne in the final, and Sacratini blocked a shot on the empty net with 34 seconds remaining to give the Cardinals a chance. With seven seconds, remaining, Plattsburgh won a faceoff at the right circle, and Catron was able to fire a wrist shot through traffic to equalize in the final seconds and send the game to a sudden-victory overtime period.

After the Red Dragons turned the puck over in their own defensive zone to start overtime, Sacratini deflected a shot from the blue line by Kevin Weaver-Vitale past Mobley for the win just 20 seconds into the extra period.
