PLATTSBURGH, NY – The nationally eighth-ranked Cortland women's hockey team fell by a score of 2-0 in the SUNYAC Semifinals to nationally 10th-ranked Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon. Cortland drops to 17-5-4, while Plattsburgh improves to 19-6-1 and advances to face Oswego in next weekend's SUNYAC Finals.
Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie H.S.) stopped 21 shots in goal while allowing just one goal.
Grace Karakas (Duluth, MN/Duluth East) and
Mia Hlasnick (Olean/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles U19) each recorded four shots on goal.
The game-winning goal for Plattsburgh was scored by Ciara Wall, while Tessa Morris also scored for the Cardinals. Molly Riggi provided two assists, and Mae Olshansky tallied one assist. Chloe Lewis stopped all 20 shots in goal for the shutout.
Plattsburgh held a 4-1 edge in shots on goal over the first five minutes of the contest, but Goergen came up with saves to keep the game scoreless.
The Cardinals broke free for the first goal of the game in the final minute of play in the first period, as Wall netted a goal off of assists from Riggi and Olshansky. The Cardinals held a 9-5 edge in shots through the first frame.
The second period featured a combined six shots on goal, with each team registering three shots on goal and the goaltenders stopping all of the attempts.
In the final minute of the second period, Plattsburgh committed a tripping penalty to send the Red Dragons on the power play with a chance to knot the score. However, Cortland was unable to muster a shot on target with the extra skater.
Late in the third period, Cortland committed a tripping penalty, which the Red Dragons were able to kill off to keep the score at 1-0. In the final minute, Cortland pulled Goergen for an extra attacker, and Plattsburgh was able to seal the victory with an empty-net goal by Morris with 21.3 seconds remaining in the contest.
