LEESBURG, FLA. – The Cortland softball team began its 2025 season with a 3-2 loss to the University of Scranton at THE Spring Games in Florida.
Cortland's second game of the day versus Rutgers-Camden was canceled after the game was initially suspended due to weather in the second inning. The game was scoreless with one out in the top of the second when a warning siren sounded due to lightning detected in the area. A storm came through a little while later and the game was eventually canceled, with none of the stats counting.
Cortland will face Hope College of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Monday in Clermont.
Scranton 3, Cortland 2
Scranton (5-2) broke a 2-2 tie when a two-out error allowed a run to score in the bottom of the sixth. Hailey Poskonka singled with one out and pinch runner Savannah Levine moved to second on an Ellyn Cervona sac bunt. Lainie Lacey then reached on an error, with Levine coming around to score on the play.
Cortland threatened in the top of the seventh.
Lainie Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) reached on a throwing error and advanced to second on the play to start the inning. With one out,
Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) singled to left to advance Ornstein to third. Pinch runner
Kayla Pendergast (West Hempstead) stole second, but Scranton pitcher Emma Tirollo escaped the jam with a groundout back to her and a strikeout to end the game.
Scranton led 2-0 after two innings on a pair of unearned runs. The Royals loaded the bases with one out in the first on a Kylie Rochford single, an Alyssa Mosconi hit by pitch and an Emily Feltenberger single. Cortland starter
McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) struck out the next batter, but a wild throw back to her after the strikeout allowed Rochford to score. In the second, Cervona led off with a single and stole second with two outs. Celia Totaro singled to right and it appeared that Cervona was thrown out at home, but Cortland was called for obstruction at the plate and the run counted.
Cortland scored a run in the top of the third. Ornstein singled and stole second.
Shelby LaMont (Amsterdam) reached on an error on a ball hit to third and Ornstein came around to score on the play. The Red Dragons tied the game in the fourth without a hit.
Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) walked and pinch runner
Emily Stavola (Somers) stole second. Barry walked and, with two outs, Stavola and Barry pulled off a double steal of third and second. Ornstein walked, and a wild pitch on ball four brought home Stavola.
Scranton starter Kiley Mullins gave up three hits and two runs, one earned, in four innings. She struck out one and walked four. Tirollo entered to start the fifth and tossed the final three innings for the win. She allowed no runs on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts. Totaro finished 1-for-2 with a walk and Cervona was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Barry went five and two thirds innings in the circle for Cortland. She gave up three unearned runs on six hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Riley Firenze (Selden/Newfield) retired the only batter she faced to end the sixth inning. Ornstein was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run, Koch walked twice and Barry went 1-for-2 with a walk.
