Cortland Loses Non-Conference Contest at #6 Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD – The Cortland women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference contest on the road at nationally sixth-ranked Salisbury by a score of 16-4 on Wednesday afternoon. Cortland suffers its fourth defeat to a nationally-ranked opponent and is 2-4 on the year, while Salisbury improves to 5-2 on the season.

Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland) scored two goals to lead the Red Dragons. Bella Dembinski (Holbrook/Sachem East) and Gemma Guy (Homer/Tully) each netted a goal. Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) and Emma Dempsey (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) provided an assist apiece.

Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead) recorded four draw controls, two caused turnovers, and two ground balls. Lexi Caron (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) led the Red Dragon defense with three caused turnovers. Trinity Parks (Port Crane/Chenango Forks) stopped six shots in goal.

Audrey Harrington led Salisbury with three goals and two assists, while Miranda Mears contributed three goals. Paige Ellis earned the win in goal, making seven saves.

After the Seagulls jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the first minute of play, Iapoce tied the score with a free-position goal with 9:35 remaining, firing a shot between the legs of the goalkeeper.

Salisbury scored the final three goals of the quarter, but Parks came up with two big saves on free-position shots to deny scoring opportunities as the score was 4-1 after one period.

Salisbury netted the first four goals of the second quarter, and Cortland closed the half with Dembinski's fifth goal of the season after a great feed over the top of the defense from Dempsey for an 8-2 score at halftime.

After Cortland successfully defended while Salisbury had a player advantage due to a green card by the Red Dragons, Guy got on the board for the Red Dragons by driving past a defender and firing into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season with 13:15 remaining in the third quarter.

The Seagulls netted a free-position goal for a 9-3 advantage with 10:22 remaining, and Cortland responded with Iapoce's second goal of the game off a pass from the left side from Cashman with 8:11 remaining

Salisbury then scored the next seven goals, two goals in the final five minutes of the third quarter and all five goals in the fourth quarter, to complete the scoring.
