WINCHESTER, VA. – The Cortland baseball team, ranked 15th nationally by D3baseball.com and 19th by the ABCA, finished 3-0 at the Shenandoah University Mr. V Memorial Tournament to improve to 5-2 on the season. Cortland defeated Immaculata, 17-5 in seven innings, on Saturday, and on Sunday the Red Dragons shut out Wittenberg, 5-0, and defeated the host Hornets, 15-6.
Cortland 17, Immaculata 5 (7 inn.)
Cortland jumped out to a 9-0 lead after an inning and a half with two runs in the top of the first and seven in the second. The lead grew to 13-2 after four innings and eventually ended after seven innings due to the 10-run rule used by the tournament.
Nick Jessen (Syracuse/West Genesee) earned the win, allowing two runs on two hits with five strikeouts and no walks in four innings.
Zachary Kringdon (Larchmont/Mamaroneck) led Cortland's 19-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with two homers, a hit by pitch, three RBI and three runs.
Adam Mieczkowski (Vestal) was 3-for-4 with a hit by pitch, two RBI and three runs,
Luke Schartner (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and
Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished 2-for-2 with a double, walk, two RBI and two runs.
Nick Marola (Saratoga/Scotia-Glenville) went 2-for-4 with two RBI,
Lucas Granger (Horseheads) finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and
Nolan Smith (Hamburg) drove in two runs.
Robert Woodward drove in two runs and Blake Schantz and WIll Kelley each went 1-for-2 for Immaculata (0-6).
Cortland 5, Wittenberg 0
Luis Misla (Tampa, FL/Riverview) allowed four hits and no walks and struck out 10 batters in five and a third innings to earn the victory. He combined on the shutout with
Matthew Nochowitz (Glen Head/North Shore), who gave up three hits and no walks with two strikeouts in two and two thirds innings, and
Nick Hanson (Ladera Ranch, CA/Aliso Niguel), who fanned two in a perfect ninth inning. Wittenberg had scored 44 runs over its first five games.
Cortland took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Mieczkowski was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by a
Dylan Tierney (East Greenbush/Columbia) two-run single and a
Tommy Poggi (Briarcliff) RBI single. The Red Dragons added a run in the fourth on a Granger RBI groundout.
Poggi was 2-for-3 with a triple, Tierney went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk and Bonacci finished 2-for-5 with two doubles.
James MacAuley finished 2-for-3 for the Tigers (4-2). Starter Mikey Eichhoff allowed five runs on five hits with six strikeouts and a walk in three and a third innings.
Cortland 15, Shenandoah 6
Cortland again got off to a quick start with seven runs in the top of the first inning. The Hornets (7-4) pulled back to within 8-4 after six innings, but the Red Dragons plated four in the seventh, one in the eighth and two in the ninth to take control.
Will McCarthy (Farmingdale), Cortland's second reliever, was awarded the win after starter
Dylan Beers (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) was pulled in the second inning. McCarthy entered with a 7-2 lead and allowed four hits and no walks with two strikeouts over three and two thirds innings. He gave up two runs.
Paul Byrne (Pittsford/Pittsford Sutherland) entered in the seventh with Cortland up 12-4 and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk and fanning four.
Cortland finished with 17 hits and ended the three-game tournament with a total of 45 hits. Schartner went 3-for-5 with a double, walk and three RBI, Smith was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs, and Bonacci finished 3-for-6 with a triple and two RBI.
Marc Stockhausen (Bronx/St. Raymond) homered and finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, Granger was 2-for-5 with a walk, RBI and two runs, and Kringdon went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Cole Ambrosius and Jaime Padilla each had two hits and Noah Cornwell drove in two runs for Shenandoah. Joe Gleason took the loss after allowing seven runs in two thirds of an inning.
