CLERMONT, FLA. – Cortland defeated The University of New England, 15-0, and lost to nationally 18th-ranked and unbeaten Wisconsin-Whitewater, 10-1, both in five innings, in non-league softball action at THE Spring Games.
Cortland (2-5) will close out its Florida trip Friday with games versus Plymouth State at 10 a.m. and McDaniel at 12:15 p.m. in Leesburg.
Cortland 15, UNE 0 (5 inn.)
Cortland led 3-0 after two innings before breaking open the game with five runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth. The game was called after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Maggie Cummings (Holland Patent) finished 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs.
Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) went 2-for-3 with a double, walk, three RBI and two runs,
Laila Smith (Guilderland) was 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs, and
Danielle DeBonis (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) went 1-for-3 with a double, walk and RBI.
McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) pitched four scoreless innings for the win. She allowed three hits and no walks and struck out four.
Sophia Wahl (Schuylerville) gave up one walk in the fifth.
For UNE (3-4), Emma Michaud, Jadyn Kimball and Emma Koenig each finished 1-for-2. Cat Higgins allowed seven runs, five earned, in three innings to suffer the loss.
Cortland scored on an error in the first, and a DeBonis RBI double and Smith RBI single made it 3-0 in the second. The Red Dragons' five-run fourth featured RBI singles by Smith and
Lainie Ornstein (Yorktown/Yorktown Heights) and a Wright run-scoring groundout. Another run scored when
Kayla Pendergast (West Hempstead) stole second and a throwing error on the play allowed a runner to come in from third.
Cortland's seven runs in the fifth resulted from a Wright two-run single, bases-loaded walks by Wahl and
Shelby LaMont (Amsterdam), a Cummings RBI single and bases-loaded walks by
Brooke Scheibe (Sayville) and
Kayla Santo (Franklin Square/Valley Stream North).
UW-Whitewater 10, Cortland 1 (5 inn.)
The nationally ranked Warhawks improved to 7-0 after scoring four in the top of the first, two in the second, three in the third and one in the fifth. The game stopped after five frames due to the eight-run rule.
Kiarra Kostroski was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored to lead UW-W. Emma Giese went 1-for-2 with a double, RBI and two runs, Kaitlyn Weidemann finished 1-for-1 with a walk and two RBI and Taylor Koehler had a pinch-hit homer in the fifth. Whitewater starter Madi DeBennette tossed four innings for the win, allowing three hits, one unearned run and no walks with two strikeouts. Karman Rowe pitched a scoreless fifth with one hit permitted.
Wright went 2-for-2 with a run scored,
Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) was 1-for-2 and Smith finished 1-for-3 for Cortland.
Gianna Endieveri (Glens Falls) gave up six runs, but only two earned, on four hits in an inning and a third.
Riley Firenze (Selden/Newfield) allowed three unearned runs in an inning and two thirds and
Molly Farley (Goshen/Chester Academy) allowed a run over the final two innings.
Whitewater's first inning featured a Kostroski RBI double, a Weidemann two-run single and a run scoring on an error after Weidemann stole second. Kostroski hit an RBI double and Keira Jarrett had an RBI single in the second, and the Warhawks scored three in the third on an error, a Giese RBI double and a Grace Wickman run-scoring single. Cortland scored in the fourth on a Wright single and a pair of errors, and Koehler finished the scoring for UW-W with a leadoff homer on the first pitch she faced in the fifth.
