Cortland Drops Pair to Oswego in SUNYAC Play

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland lost a pair of games to visiting Oswego in SUNYAC baseball action, falling 8-4 in the first game and then 7-6 in 10 innings in the second contest despite a dramatic three-run homer from Lucas Granger (Horseheads) that tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Cortland (9-9, 1-1 SUNYAC) will host New Paltz in a three-game series Friday and Saturday in a match of last year's SUNYAC tournament finals.

Oswego 8, Cortland 4

Oswego scored five runs in the third and three in the sixth to take an 8-0 lead. Cortland answered back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth and left the bases loaded without scoring in both the seventh and ninth innings.

Thomas Harrington went 2-for-4 with three RBI, Dylan Rosenberg was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Tishawn Featherstone went 1-for-3 with a double, walk and two RBI for Oswego. Jacob Sanders went six-plus innings for the win, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. Alek Conrad gave up three hits and one walk and struck out three in three scoreless innings of relief for the save.

Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished 3-for-5, Luke Schartner (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) was 2-for-4 and JJ DeLawder (Hyde Park/Franklin D. Roosevelt) drove in two runs for Cortland. Ryan Banks (Woodbury/Syosset) took the loss after allowing five runs in two and a third innings. Tommy Lynch (West Seneca/Canisius), Cortland's third reliever, allowed two hits, one walk and no runs and struck out two over the final two and two thirds innings.

Oswego's five-run third featured a Harrington RBI single, a Daniel Winchester sac fly, a Rosenberg RBI single and a Featherstone two-run double. The Lakers extended the lead to 8-0 in the sixth on a Anthony Barone RBI groundout and a Harrington two-run single.

Cortland was held to one hit over the first five and two thirds innings before mounting a two-out, four-run rally in the sixth. After singles by Bonacci and Schartner, Nolan Smith (Hamburg) doubled in a run and DeLawder had a pinch-hit two-run single. Ethan Gallo (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) followed with an infield single, and a throwing error on the play allowed a run to score. The Red Dragons' final two threats ended with a flyout in the seventh with the bases loaded and a strikeout in the ninth with the bases packed.

Oswego 7, Cortland 6 (10 inn.)

Cortland led 3-0 entering the seventh before Oswego (9-5, 2-1 SUNYAC) tied the game in that inning and scored twice to take the lead in the eighth. The Lakers added a run in the ninth to go up 6-3. In the bottom of the ninth, Kameron Hartenstein (Meriden, CT/Maloney) led off with a walk and Marc Stockhausen (Bronx/St. Raymond) had a pinch-hit single. After a strikeout and a groundout and with runners on second and third, Granger hit a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left center to tie the game.

Oswego, however, came back with the eventual winning run in the top of the 10th. Trey McGowan led off with a walk and Emil Sander was hit by a pitch. Harrington singled with one out to load the bases and Winchester walked to force in the tiebreaking run.  Matthew Drillings, who entered in ninth, retired the side in the bottom of the 10th to earn the win.

Cortland led 2-0 in the second on Danny Jackson's (Lagrangeville/Arlington) two-run single and added a run in the fourth on a Nick Marola (Saratoga/Scotia-Glenville) sac fly. Oswego tied the game in the seventh on Brendan Mair's two-run double and a wild pitch that allowed a run to score. With two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth, Mair hit a ball to the hole at short for an infield hit, and a wild throw trying to get the force at third led to a second run scoring. Patrick May's RBI double provided what proved to be a key insurance run in the ninth.

May, Featherstone, Mair, Harrington and Matt Carner each finished with two hits for Oswego. Starter Jonah Shearer allowed three runs in four innings and Sean Dertinger pitched four hitless and scoreless innings after entering with a runner on in the fifth.

Smith was 2-for-5, Granger was 1-for-4 with a walk and the three-run homer, and Jackson finished 1-for-2 with two RBI for Cortland. Nick Jessen (Syracuse/West Genesee) started and tossed five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Paul Byrne (Pittsford/Pittsford Sutherland) was charged with the run in the 10th and took the loss. Lawrence Citrola (East Northport/Northport) issued the walk that forced in the final run but got out of further damage with a strikeout and fielder's choice grounder with the bases loaded.
