CORTLAND, NY – Sam Rothman (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) scored the game-winning goal with 8:09 remaining in the fourth quarter, and the nationally 18th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team earned its seventh straight victory with a 16-12 win over St. John Fisher on Saturday afternoon at Grady Field.
Cortland is now 7-1 on the year, while St. John Fisher falls to 4-4.
Rothman led Cortland with seven points on four goals and three assists.
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) provided four goals and two assists.
Klay Stuver (Fairport) scored three times and tallied an assist.
Christian Lembo (Farmingdale) had four caused turnovers and scooped up two ground balls.
Tucker Macknik (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) recorded two caused turnovers and picked up five ground balls.
Travis Wagner (Penfield) made 11 saves in goal for the Red Dragons.
Brady Mason scored four goals and added two assists for the Cardinals. Tyler Manning stopped 12 shots for St. John Fisher.
Kole Stuver (Fairport) gave Cortland an early 1-0 lead with 12:52 left in the first quarter, before the Cardinals tied the game just over a minute later and took the lead with nine minutes left.
Cortland scored three of the last four goals of the period, a goal each from Stoecker, Kavanagh, and Rothman, to take a 4-3 lead after a quarter.
Cortland outscored St. John Fisher 6-3 in the second quarter to take a 10-6 halftime lead.
Klay Stuver and Kavanagh each netted a pair of goals, and
Kole Stuver and
Ryan Scanlon (Cornelius, NC/William Amos Hough). Of the six goals, two were man-up goals in the frame for the Red Dragons, one each for
Klay Stuver and Kavanagh.
A goal by Rothman off a feed from Kavanagh with 9:59 in the third quarter made it 12-7, but St. John Fisher scored the final four goals of the quarter to reduce the Cortland lead to just one entering the fourth quarter.
Mason's fourth goal of the game with 14:17 remaining tied the score, as the shot was partially saved by Wagner but rolled just over the goal line.
After each team couldn't convert in the next minutes, Rothman broke the deadlock with 8:09 remaining, driving to the cage and depositing a shot into the top right corner of the net.
Cortland netted three more insurance goals in the final minutes to secure the win.
Nathan Nagengast (Bay Shore) took a pass from Wagner in the Cortland side of the field, carried the ball nearly forty yards down the field through multiple defenders, and snapped a shot into the corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
Kavanagh netted a goal off a feed from Scanlon with 3:34 left, and
Connor Cosgrove (Warwick/Don Bosco Prep) completed the scoring with his first collegiate goal with 2:35 remaining.
