Cortland Hammers Clarkson, 12-0, in Non-Conference Action

CORTLAND, NY – The Red Dragon offense exploded for 12 runs on 15 hits, and seven pitchers combined to toss a two-hit shutout, as the Cortland baseball team defeated Clarkson, 12-0, in non-conference action at Wallace Field on Tuesday afternoon. Cortland improves to 11-10 with the victory, while Clarkson falls to 8-8 on the year.

Marc Stockhausen (Bronx/St. Raymond) went 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBI, and drew two walks. Zach Taro (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer for the Red Dragons. Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) reached base four times, batting 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Luke Schartner (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) and Kameron Hartenstein (Meriden, CT/Maloney) both hit a double.

Matthew Nochowitz (Glen Head/North Shore) started for Cortland and earned the win, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out eight batters. He qualified for the win due to a pre-determined pitch count.

Warren Miller (Plattsburgh), Brady Mazzeo (Averill Park), Tommy Lynch (West Seneca/Canisius), and Tyler Blake (Cortland) each tossed a hitless, scoreless inning. Zack Zarrilli (Farmingdale) and Eli Stowe (Poughkeepsie/Millbrook) combined to pitch the eighth inning.

Cam Jerrett hit a double for the Golden Knights, and Colby Fox recorded the other Clarkson hit. CJ Kanick surrendered five earned runs over 3.0 innings to take the loss.

Cortland scored three times in the first inning, and added a run in the second and two more in the fourth to go up 6-0. The Red Dragons tacked on a run in the fifth inning, scored twice in the sixth, and completed the scoring with three runs in the seventh.

After Nochowitz tossed a perfect 1-2-3 top of the first, Bonacci led off the bottom of the first with a single, stole second and moved to third on an error, and scored on a RBI single to right by JJ DeLawder (Hyde Park/Franklin D. Roosevelt). Stockhausen followed with a two-run homer to left field on the first pitch he saw to make it 3-0.

Jerrett led off the second with a double to right center, but Nochowitz struck out three in the inning to keep the Golden Knights off the board. Schartner sent a one-out RBI double to deep left field to drive in Nick Marola (Saratoga/Scotia-Glenville) with Cortland's fourth run in the bottom of the second.

Marola walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth, and Bonacci dropped a perfect bunt for a single. Both moved up a base on a passed ball by the Clarkson catcher, and came home to score on a pinch-hit, two-run single down the left field line by Adam Mieczkowski (Vestal).

Dylan Tierney (East Greenbush/Columbia) grounded an infield single to second base to drive in Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) in the bottom of the fifth, and the Red Dragons scored twice in the sixth when Hartenstein doubled to left field and Dan Collins (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill) came around to score on a throwing error by the left fielder, before Elkins drove in Hartenstein with a groundout one batter later.

Taro blasted a three-run home run to left center on the first pitch he saw with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, as Cortland took advantage of a dropped fly ball in left field one batter earlier for three unearned runs.

Stowe entered the game to pitch with runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the eighth, and induced a fly out to center field for the third out. Blake tossed a perfect 1-2-3 top of the ninth with two strikeouts to close out the game.
