CORTLAND, N.Y. - Five Cortland pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as the Red Dragons defeated visiting John Jay College, 22-0, in a non-league game at Wallace Field.
Â
The game was called in the bottom of the seventh after a lightning detection delay. The teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader, but that changed due to rain earlier in the day pushing the start time to 2 p.m.
Â
Dylan Beers (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) started as part of predetermined "bullpen day" and went three innings for the victory. He was perfect with five strikeouts.
Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) and
Warren Miller (Plattsburgh) followed with one perfect inning apiece, each striking out a batter.
Paul Byrne (Pittsford/Pittsford Sutherland) allowed a hit and fanned a batter in the sixth and
Tyler Blake (Cortland) struck out two hitters and gave up a hit in the seventh.
Â
Cortland (18-10), which won its eighth straight game, finished with 19 hits from a combined 13 players.
Danny Jackson (Lagrangeville/Arlington) finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored and
Mitchell Kelly (Webster/Webster Thomas) was 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBI.
Luke Schartner (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) and
Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) each scored four runs. Schartner was 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBI and Bonacci finished 2-for-3 with a double, walk and RBI.
Â
Marc Stockhausen (Bronx/St. Raymond) ended the day 2-for-3 with walk, two RBI and two runs and
JJ DeLawder (Hyde Park/Franklin D. Roosevelt) was 1-for-2 with a double, hit by pitch and three RBI.
Nicholas Galuski (Wynantskill/Averill Park) finished 1-for-2 with a double and three RBI and
Dylan Tierney (East Greenbush/Columbia) went 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI.
Â
James Hordodyski went 1-for-2 and Ethan Simaan was 1-for-3 for John Jay (11-11). Hordodyski's single through the right side to lead off the top of the sixth broke up Cortland's combined perfect game bid. Danny Opramolla started for the Bloodhounds and gave up seven runs, but just two earned, in two innings.
Â
Cortland scored three runs in the first and four runs each in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 15-0 lead. The Red Dragons added three in the sixth and scored four in the seventh and had the bases loaded when the game was stopped. All of the stats in the seventh inning count since the team outcome was not affected.
