CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland softball team evened its season record at 12-12 and improved to 8-0 in SUNYAC play with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Morrisville. The Red Dragons won 11-1 in the opener and 14-1 in the nightcap, with both games called after five innings due to the eight-run rule.

Cortland returns to action with a doubleheader at Buffalo State on Monday at 3 p.m.

Cortland 11, Morrisville 1 (5 inn.)

Morrisville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Cortland came back with five runs in the second and six in the fourth to go up 11-1.

Laila Smith (Guilderland) finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and
Maggie Cummings (Holland Patent) went 2-for-2 with a walk, RBI and two runs scored.
Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) went 1-for-2 with a double, hit by pitch, two RBI and two runs,
Kaeli McAnally (Islip) was 1-for-3 with three RBI,
Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) finished 1-for-3 with a walk and RBI and
Lainie Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) was 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs.

McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) improved to 5-4 with four innings of three-hit ball. She gave up one run, walked one and struck out three.
Sophia Wahl (Schuylerville) allowed one hit in a scoreless top of the fifth.

Callie LaFontaine finished 2-for-3 with a double and Hannah Brennan and Sara Brefka each went 1-for-2 for Morrisville. Piper Kaylor allowed 11 runs, but only five earned, in three and two thirds innings for the Mustangs.

Morrisville struck first when LaFontaine led off with a single, stole second with one out and scored on a two-out Hannah Brennan single. The scoring in Cortland's five-run second began with a Koch RBI double and a McAnally RBI groundout. Ornstein then bunted for a hit, and during the play took off for second. The throw to second was wild, allowing not only Koch to score but also Ornstein to continue to round the bases for a run. Smith singled in a run later in the inning.

In the fourth, the Red Dragons loaded the bases with a walk, a one-out single and an error. Barry walked to force in a run and, with two outs, Cummings singled home a run, Koch was hit to force in a run, McAnally hit a two-run single and, two batters later, Wright walked to score a run.

Cortland 14, Morrisville 1 (5 inn.)

Cortland jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a run in the first and five in the second. Morrisville scored its run in the top of the fourth, but the Red Dragons responded with eight runs in the bottom of the inning.

Cortland finished with 14 hits, including seven doubles. Smith went 3-for-3 with a double, walk, two RBI and two runs and finished the doubleheader a combined 6-for-7 with a walk. Wright was 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs and McAnally went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs.

Barry finished 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI,
Kayla Pendergast (West Hempstead) was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs, and
Gianna Endieveri (Glens Falls) was 1-for-2 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Endieveri also earned the win in the circle to improve to 6-3 on the season. She gave up five hits and one run with no walks and two strikeouts.
Riley Firenze (Selden/Newfield) retired the side in order in the fifth with one strikeout.

Morrisville (7-11, 2-6 SUNYAC) was led by Lindsay Fish, who went 1-for-1 with a double and sacrifice fly, and Sara Brefka, who had a hit in her lone plate appearance. LaFontaine, Brennan and Bella Gaskins were each 1-for-2. Kendall Darling took the loss after giving up six runs in one-plus innings.

Barry doubled in Cortland's first-inning run, and the second inning included an Endieveri two-run double, a Wright two-run single and a Smith RBI double. Fish's sac fly for Morrisville made it 6-1 in the top of the fourth. The Red Dragons' eight-run bottom of the inning was highlighted by a
Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) RBI double, a Barry sac fly, a McAnally RBI double, a
Danielle DeBonis (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) run-scoring double, a Wright RBI groundout and Smith's RBI single. Two other runs in the inning scored on wild pitches.
