CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland softball team dropped its home opener to St. John Fisher, 7-2, in a non-league match during the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. The second game was canceled due to rain, which had started during the middle of the first contest.

Cortland (4-10) will begin SUNYAC play Friday with a scheduled doubleheader at Buffalo State

Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Shelby LaMont (Amsterdam) singled with one out and Kaeli McAnally (Islip) singled with two outs to put runners on first and third. After McAnally stole second, Lainie Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) hit a grounder to short. McAnally got caught in a rundown between second and third, but LaMont was able to score before McAnally was tagged for the final out.

St. John Fisher (9-8) tied the game in the top of the third. Cassidy Evanetski was hit by a pitch and Madi Rose reached on an error after a sac bunt to set up runners on first and third. Rose stole second and Maddie Donlin flied out to center for a sac fly to bring in a run. The Cardinals took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on Katie Mannis' RBI double and a Cassidy Evanetski RBI fielder's choice.

Fisher plated four runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 7-1. After a Taylor Shackleton walk and Emily McManus double, Mari Spitz hit a three-run homer to right. Mannis homered to left with two outs three batters later.

Cortland closed the scoring in the sixth. Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) led off with a double and LaMont's one-out single moved pinch runner Emily Stavola (Somers) to third. The next batter struck out, but on the play pinch runner Anj Ferrara (Niskayuna) stole second, and when the throw to second rolled away Stavola scored from third.
