Cortland Wins 17-6 on the Road at Oneonta

ONEONTA, NY – The Cortland women's lacrosse team scored 10 times in the first quarter to win its third consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest with a dominant 17-6 victory at Oneonta on Wednesday evening. Cortland improves to 5-4 (3-0 SUNYAC), while Oneonta drops to 3-7 (2-1 SUNYAC) with the defeat.
 
Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland) and Brooke Elizalde (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) each had four goals and an assist for Cortland, while Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) chipped in three goals, two assists, three caused turnovers, and three ground balls. Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) provided two goals, two assists, two caused turnovers, and four ground balls, and Gemma Guy (Homer/Tully) scored twice and added an assist.
 
Trinity Parks (Port Crane/Chenango Forks) stopped six shots in goal for the win, Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) contributed five draw controls and three ground balls, and Taylor Mullins (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) recorded two caused turnovers.
 
Cassidy Moore led Oneonta with five points on four goals and one assist. Margot Haring started and suffered the loss in goal, while Julia Hawkins made seven saves and allowed only five goals in relief.
 
Iapoce opened the scoring for Cortland less than a minute into the first quarter, and Oneonta responded with a player-up goal by Ellie Downey with 12:53 remaining in the frame, taking advantage of a Cortland green card.
 
Cortland then scored eight straight goals to go up 9-1 late in the quarter. Guy netted Cortland's second goal with 11:47 remaining, and Cortland scored three times in the span of 1:30, one goal each from Cashman, Elizalde, and Melillo. Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead), Bella Dembinski (Holbrook/Sachem East), and Guy provided assists on those three goals. Cashman, Elizalde, and Iapoce each netted a goal for the second time in the game, before Emma Dempsey (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) found the back of the net to put the visitors up by eight.
 
Moore scored a free-position goal for Oneonta to break the Cortland scoring run, but Cashman found Iapoce for a goal with 13 seconds remaining to give Cortland the 10-2 advantage after one quarter.
 
Moore scored another goal for Oneonta in the first minute of play in the second quarter, and Cortland scored the final three goals of the half to lead 13-3 at halftime. Elizalde completed her hat trick off an assist from Melillo with 12:32 remaining, Cashman scored a player-up goal from the free position for her third goal of the game, and Melillo scored her eighth goal of the season with under a minute remaining.
 
Both Cortland and Oneonta scored twice in the third quarter, as Iapoce and Elizalde each scored a goal for Cortland. Cortland outscored Oneonta 2-1 in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring. Sierra Natoli (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored her first collegiate goal with 10:12 remaining, and Guy found the back of the net with the final action of the victory for Cortland.
