Luke Schartner and Matthew Nochowitz Named SUNYAC Baseball Athlete and Pitcher of the Week

Cortland senior outfielder Luke Schartner (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) has been selected as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Baseball Athlete of the Week and sophomore Matthew Nochowitz (Glen Head/North Shore) has been named the SUNYAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 20.

Schartner batted .500 (8-for-16) with two homers, three doubles, three walks, 12 RBI and seven runs scored in four Cortland victories. He finished the week with a 1.063 slugging percentage. Schartner tied a school single-game record with nine RBI in a 16-4 win at Canton on Friday. He's the third player in school history with nine RBI in a game and the first since 1993. He finished that game 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and two three-run doubles, and in the second game of the doubleheader he went 3-for-6 with a solo homer, double and two runs scored. Scharnter also went 2-for-2 with two walks, two RBI and four runs scored in a win over John Jay on Tuesday.

Schartner has played in all 30 games this spring, 27 as a starter. He's batting .310 with three homers and team highs of 10 doubles and 31 RBI.

Nochowitz earned SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week honors for the second straight week. He tossed seven strong scoreless innings to earn the win in a 14-0 victory at Canton on Friday. He allowed just five hits with no walks and struck out 11 batters.

With the win, Nochowitz improved to 3-0 with a 4.15 ERA. In 30 and a third innings he's allowed 31 hits and four walks and has struck out 42 batters.

Cortland (20-10, 10-3 SUNYAC) will a non-league game at Ithaca on Tuesday and a three-game SUNYAC series at Plattsburgh Friday and Saturday.
