Big Sixth Inning Leads Cortland Past Plattsburgh, 13-3

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Cortland scored seven times in the top of the sixth inning to break away from a tie game and the Red Dragons defeated host Plattsburgh, 13-3, to complete a three-game sweep of the Cardinals in SUNYAC baseball action. The game was called after seven innings due to the league's 10-run rule.

Cortland improved to 23-11 overall and 13-3 in SUNYAC play. Cortland has two league make-up games remaining - at home versus New Paltz on Tuesday (moved from Monday due to New Paltz making up games at Fredonia) and at Canton next Sunday, May 4.

Cortland finished with 16 hits, led by Nolan Smith (Hamburg) who went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Nick Marola (Saratoga/Scotia-Glenville) finished 2-for-3 with a homer, walk, two RBI and two runs, Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) was 2-for-4 with a double, hit by pitch, RBI and two runs and Lucas Granger (Horseheads) was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.

Zachary Kringdon (Larchmont/Mamaroneck) ended 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI and Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished 1-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and three runs. Marc Stockhausen (Bronx/St. Raymond) hit a grand slam and walked among his five plate appearances.

Ryan Banks (Woodbury/Syosset) started and gave up three runs in three and a third innings. He struck out four and walked two, and gave up just two hits, but hit three batters. Dylan Beers (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) entered in the bottom of the fourth with runners on first and second, one out and Cortland up 3-1. Plattsburgh eventually tied the game in that inning on RBI singles by Adam Wein and Joey DiRocco, but Beers recorded a strikeout and a flyout to keep the game tied.

Beers was the pitcher of record when Cortland took the lead in the top of the sixth and he earned the win to improve to 3-0. Tommy Lynch (West Seneca/Canisius) and Nick Hanson (Ladera Ranch, CA/Aliso Niguel) each fanned two batters in the scoreless sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

Cortland took a 2-0 lead in the first. Bonacci singled and took second on a wild pitch, and he scored on Elkins' line drive single off the pitcher's leg. Elkins moved to second on a groundout and scored on a Smith single through the right side.

Plattsburgh scored in the first on two hit batters sandwiched around a walk, followed by Kyle Cremin sac fly. The next batter hit a ball down the third base line that third baseman Dylan Tierney (East Greenbush/Columbia) turned into a third-to-first double play to end the inning.

Tierney started the second by being hit by a pitch and Granger hit into a fielder's choice to force Tierney at second. Granger advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a Bonacci double to left center to make it 3-1.

In the top of the sixth, Granger singled with one out, stole second and scored the go-ahead run on a Marola RBI single. After Bonacci was hit by a pitch, Elkins walked to load the bases and Stockhausen unloaded them with a blast to left for a grand slam and an 8-3 lead. Smith followed with a single, Kringdon doubled, Luke Schartner (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) drove in a run with a sac fly and Tierney singled in a run. Cortland added three runs in the seventh. Marola led off with a homer, and later in the frame Kringdon and Schartner each singled in runs.

Wein went 2-for-3 for Plattsburgh (9-20, 1-13 SUNYAC), which finished with five hits. Isaiah Maines started and gave up three runs in two innings. Justin Sargent took the loss after allowing three runs in three and a third innings.
