Cortland Overcomes Early Deficits in 6-2 Non-League Win vs. Marywood

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Adam Mieczkowski (Vestal) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give Cortland the lead and the Red Dragons went on to defeat visiting Marywood University, 6-2, in non-league baseball action.

Cortland improved to 25-11 and has won 15 of its last 16 games. The Red Dragons are scheduled to host Scranton in a non-league game Saturday at noon and wrap up the regular season with a make-up SUNYAC game Sunday at Canton.

Mieczkowski finished 2-for-4 with a homer, double, hit by pitch, two RBI and two runs scored. Nolan Smith (Hamburg) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and Marc Stockhausen (Bronx/St. Raymond) finished 2-for-5.

Brady Mazzeo (Averill Park) allowed one run on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts in three and a third innings. Tommy Lynch (West Seneca/Canisius) earned the win with two and two thirds innings of two-hit relief. He gave up one run, struck out four and walked one. Dan Collins (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill) started the seventh and retired all nine batters he faced, two by strikeout, to earn his first save of the season.

Marywood (13-21) was led by Tristan Gatchalian, who finished 3-for-4 with a homer, double and RBI, and AJ Gianetti, who ended 2-for-4. Austin Bausman gave up one hit and two walks and fanned two in two scoreless innings. Caleb Fisher allowed a run over the next two innings. Brett Kugler took the loss after being tagged for five runs, but just two earned, in an inning and two thirds.

Marywood loaded the bases with no outs in the second on an AJ Kuzior single, an Adam Ginsberg double and a Jaylen Robinson walk. After a strikeout, Christian Michak hit a grounder to short. Cortland got the force at second, but Michak beat the throw to first to avoid the double play and drive in a run.

Cortland tied it in the fourth. Mieczkowski doubled with one out, Dylan Tierney (East Greenbush/Columbia) walked, and Lucas Granger (Horseheads) hit a grounder to third, with Tierney safe at second on a wild throw. Nick Marola (Saratoga/Scotia-Glenville) followed with an infield single to drive in Mieczkowski, although Marywood avoided further trouble with a shallow flyout and a strikeout to end the inning.

Marywood grabbed the lead again on Gatchalian's solo homer in the top of the fifth. The Pacers then loaded the bases on an AJ Giannetti double, a Joey Ayers intentional walk and, with two outs, a Ginsberg hit by pitch. Lynch struck out the next batter to keep the Marywood lead at 2-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Smith singled with one out and, with two outs, Mieczkowski hit a two-run homer to left.

The Red Dragons added three insurance runs in the sixth. With two outs, Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) reached on an error and Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) singled through the left side to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. Stockhausen singled to load the bases and Smith singled to drive in two runs. With runners on first and third, Smith advanced to second on a wild pitch and Stockhausen scored during the attempt to throw out Smith at second.

Cortland pitching retired the final 13 Marywood batters, starting with the strikeout to end the top of the fifth, followed by a 1-2-3 inning by Lynch in the sixth and Collins' three perfect frames.
