Stockhausen and Elkins Propel Cortland to Sweep of Fredonia

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Marc Stockhausen (Bronx/St. Raymond) went a combined 5-for-8 with a homer and nine RBI and Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished a combined 6-for-7 with four runs scored as Cortland swept a SUNYAC baseball doubleheader versus visiting Fredonia, 10-0 and 10-2. The first game was called after seven innings due to the SUNYAC's 10-run rule.

Cortland improved to 14-10 overall and 5-3 in the SUNYAC as the Red Dragons completed a three-game sweep of the Blue Devils between Thursday and Friday. Fredonia fell to 8-9 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Fredonia was the "home" team during the entire series since the games were originally scheduled to be played at Fredonia but were moved to Cortland due to weather and field conditions.

Cortland is scheduled to host New Paltz in a single contest Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in a make-up of a game rained out on March 29.

Cortland 10, Fredonia 0 (7 inn.)

Stockhausen finished 3-for-3 with a grand slam, a hit by pitch and six RBI and Elkins was 3-for-3 with a run scored in support of Red Dragon starter Luis Misla (Tampa, FL/Riverview). Misla improved to 5-2 with six innings of two-hit ball. He struck out 13 batters and walked three. Lawrence Citrola (East Northport/Northport) tossed a hitless seventh with one strikeout.

Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) went 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored. Nick Marola (Saratoga/Scotia-Glenville) ended 2-for-3 and scored twice and Dylan Tierney (East Greenbush/Columbia) hit a solo homer.

Michael Byrns allowed eight runs in five innings to suffer the loss for Fredonia. Brady Ventura was 1-for-2 with a walk and Kyle Tedford finished 1-for-3.

Stockhausen opened the scoring in the top of the first with a sac fly to score Bonacci, who led off with a walk, took second on a wild pitch and went to third on an Elkins single. Cortland put up four in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Marola led off with a single, followed by bunt singles from Bonacci and Elkins to load the bases. Stockhausen proceeded to unload the bases with a deep grand slam to left.

Stockhausen also drove in Cortland's sixth run with an RBI single in the fourth, and Nolan Smith (Hamburg) followed with a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run. Tierney led off the fifth with a homer, and Cortland's final two runs came via an error and a Tommy Poggi (Briarcliff) sac fly.

Ryan Banks (Woodbury/Syosset) started and was pulled after four innings due to a predetermined pitch count. He picked up the win after allowing just two hits and one run with five strikeouts and two walks. He retired the first eight batters he faced. Tommy Lynch (West Seneca/Canisius) gave up a run on three hits with a strikeout in three and two thirds innings. Zack Zarrilli (Farmingdale) allowed a hit in the eighth before retiring a batter to end the innings with runners on second and third. Kyle Majka (Clinton) made his collegiate debut in the ninth and retired the side in order with one strikeout.
