Five Cortland football players - defensive back

Matt Lotter (Fredonia) - have been chosen as team captains for the 2025 season in a team vote, according to Cortland head coach
Tom Blumenauer.
Cortland is coming off an 11-1 season in 2024. The Red Dragons won their fourth straight Empire 8 title with a 6-0 record, defeated Ithaca for the second straight season in the annual Cortaca Jug rivalry game, and won in the NCAA Division III second round versus Endicott before falling to Springfield in the third round. Cortland is a combined 45-5 over the past four seasons, including a 14-1 mark during its national championship season in 2023.
Cortland opens its season at home on Saturday, Sept. 6 versus Grove City in a rematch of an NCAA second-round contest in 2023. The Red Dragons will also host Union in non-league action on Sept. 13 before opening Empire 8 play at Hartwick on Sept. 20. Cortland's home games, in addition to Grove City and Union, will be Oct. 4 versus Utica, Oct. 18 against Alfred University and Nov. 8 versus Brockport. The regular-season closes at Ithaca on Nov. 15.
