Cortland Sweeps Potsdam in Pair of Six-Inning Contests

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland swept visiting Potsdam in a SUNYAC doubleheader, winning 8-0 in the opener and 14-6 in the second game, both in six innings.

Cortland (18-14) and New Paltz, which split a doubleheader Friday at Fredonia, enter the final two games of the regular season tied for the SUNYAC lead with 14-2 league marks. Cortland hosts Plattsburgh in a twinbill Saturday at noon and New Paltz plays a doubleheader Saturday at Buffalo State. If the teams are tied after Saturday's play, they are tied in the league's first tiebreaker (head-to-head), and the league's next tiebreaker would compare records against teams from the top of the standings down. Buffalo State is currently third, and Cortland split with the Bengals this year.

Cortland 8, Potsdam 0 (6 inn.)

McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) threw a three-hit shutout over six innings for the victory to improve to 8-5 on the season. She struck out five, walked one, and didn't allow a hit until Danielle Moscarello singled up the middle to lead off the top of the fifth.

Barry also finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a homer, double, RBI and two runs scored. Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) went 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs and Laila Smith (Guilderland) finished 2-for-2 with a sac fly, sac bunt and two RBI. Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) drove in two runs and Lainie Ornstein (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) scored two runs.

Potsdam starter Lexie Cottrill allowed eight runs, four earned, over five-plus innings. Kiara Lovejoy finished 1-for-1 with a walk and Moscarello went 1-for-2.

Cortland scored twice in the first on an error and, with two outs and no one one, back-to-back doubles by Barry and Maggie Cummings (Holland Patent). Scotto drove in a run with a sac fly and Barry hit a solo homer in a two-run third inning, and the lead grew to 7-0 in the fourth on an error, a Smith sac fly and a Scotto RBI single. The Red Dragons walked-off with the eight-run win when Ornstein singled, stole second and scored two batters later on a Smith single.

Cortland 14, Potsdam 6 (6 inn.)

Cortland was 60 feet away from winning in the fifth, leading 8-1 with a runner on third, but couldn't score. Potsdam then scored five runs in the top of the sixth to draw within 8-6, only to have Cortland reach the eight-run margin anyway with six runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Wright went 4-for-5 with two doubles, five RBI and two runs and finished the doubleheader a combined 6-for-7 with two walks, five RBI and three runs. Ornstein was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice and two runs, Kaeli McAnally (Islip) finished 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs, Cummings was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs, and Barry finished 2-for-4. Smith drove in two runs and Kayla Pendergast (West Hempstead) scored three runs.

Gianna Endieveri (Glens Falls) allowed one unearned run over three innings. She gave up four hits, walked one and struck out one. She did not qualify for the win, however, since she didn't pitch the four innings required of a starter in a game that goes six or more innings. Molly Farley (Goshen/Chester Academy) pitched the next two and a third innings and received the win, and Sophia Wahl (Schuylerville) entered in the sixth with the potential tying run on deck. Although she allowed a two-run double, she recovered to record the next two outs and earned her second save of the season.

Only six of the 14 runs allowed by Potsdam starter Sam Horne were earned as the Bears committed five errors. Kaylee Dobransky was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs, Moscarello went 2-for-3 and Cottrill was 1-for-2 with a double, walk and two RBI.

Cortland scored on a two-out error in the first to take the lead and Wright doubled in two runs in the seconds to put the Red Dragons up 3-0. Potsdam scored in the third when Dobransky doubled and eventually scored on a two-out error. Cortland's four-run third inning included a McAnally RBI single, another Wright two-run double and a Smith squeeze bunt that drove in Ornstein from third.

McAnally's RBI single in the fourth gave the Red Dragons an 8-1 lead. Ornstein reached third base in the fifth on a single and two groundouts before being stranded after a flyout. Potsdam then scored its five runs in the top of the sixth on a Alexys Rosick RBI grounder with the bases loaded, with an error allowing her to score, followed by a Dobransky two-run single and a Cottrill two-run double.

Cortland started its winning rally with a Barry single, a Cummings double and a Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) two-run double. With one out, an error on a fielder's choice put runners on first and third. Brooke Scheibe (Sayville) picked up an RBI with a ball hit to short and everyone was safe on an error. Wright beat out a chopper to third to drive in a run, another run scored on a wild pitch, and Smith hit a walk-off RBI single for the second straight game.
