Cortland Falls 12-8 at Oswego in SUNYAC Finals

OSWEGO, NY – The Cortland women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-8 decision to Oswego in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Finals on Saturday afternoon. Cortland ends the season with an 11-7 record, while Oswego moves to 15-2 and earns the conference's automatic qualifying berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
 
Toni Cashman (East Moriches/Westhampton Beach) scored five times for Cortland. She finishes her Cortland career with 238 goals, the third-most goals in a career in program history.
 
Mia Mitchell (Akwesasne/The Hill Academy) netted a pair of goals, while Nicole Iapoce (Clintondale/Highland) provided a goal and an assist. Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) chipped in two assists.

Cashman, Melillo, Iapoce, and Gemma Guy (Homer/Tully) were named to the all-tournament team for their performances in the conference tournament.
 
Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead) had three draw controls and two caused turnovers. She also became just the 11th player in program history to surpass 150 career draw controls. Isabel Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scooped up three ground balls and recorded two caused turnovers. Trinity Parks (Port Crane/Chenango Forks) made seven saves in goal.
 
Alexis Hill had four goals and an assist for Oswego, while Cassidy Croce and Madison Davis each scored three times. Mackenzie Winn provided a goal and four assists. Sophie Ruschin scored a goal and had nine draw controls. Alana Iacovissi made 10 saves for the win in goal.
 
The teams traded goals in the first quarter, with Ruschin's goal for Oswego followed by a player-up goal by Mitchell with 10:35 remaining. A free-position goal by Hill gave Oswego a 2-1 lead, before Cashman scored her first goal of the game to tie the score at 2-2 at the end of one quarter.
 
The Lakers outscored the Red Dragons 4-1 in the second quarter to take a 6-3 halftime lead, with Mitchell scoring the lone Cortland goal in the frame on a free-position shot.
 
Cortland pulled to within two goals with a goal by Iapoce off a feed from Melillo just 21 seconds into the third quarter. Another Oswego goal by Cruce made it 7-4, and Cashman's second goal of the game made it 7-5 with 4:07 left in the quarter.
 
The Lakers scored four straight goals, two at the end of the third quarter and two more to begin the fourth quarter to give Oswego a 11-5 edge. Cashman scored to pull Cortland within five, but a player-up goal by Hill gave Oswego a 12-6 lead with 5:46 remaining.
 
Cashman scored two goals in the span of six seconds in the final two minutes of action, but the Red Dragons were unable to mount a late comeback.
 
At the conclusion of the game, Cortland's Chelsey Weber (Holtsville/Sachem East) was presented with the SUNYAC Elite 20, an award modeled after the NCAA ELITE 90 program that recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. Weber is a junior Biology major with a 3.95 overall GPA.
