THE TOURNAMENT AND HISTORY… After clinching the top seed in the 2025 SUNYAC Softball Tournament, Cortland earned the right to host the six-team tournament. Due to weather and field conditions, the opening day of the tournament will be played at Oneonta's turf field. The tournament also takes a new format this season, as the six-team, double-elimination format is gone. This year's schedule begins with a hybrid four-game schedule on the opening day, where third-seeded Buffalo State and sixth-seeded Plattsburgh will square off in a single-elimination game, followed by another single-elimination game between fourth-seeded Fredonia and fifth-seeded Oneonta. After the second elimination game, a four-team, double-elimination tournament begins to decide a conference champion. Top-seeded Cortland will face the #4/#5 winner, while second-seeded New Paltz will take on the #3/#6 winner to conclude the opening day. The second day will consist of three games to whittle down the field to two teams, and the third day will be the championship round of up to two games. Sunday is the make-up day, if weather forces any postponements.

Cortland is looking to be crowned as SUNYAC champion for the 17th time in history. The Red Dragons' 16 team championships are the most of any team in the conference. Cortland is in search of its first SUNYAC title under head coach Molly O'Donnell, and first since 2019.

The Red Dragons are 7-3 against New Paltz in conference tournament action, but the Hawks defeated Cortland in 2-of-3 matchups in last year's conference tournament on the way to the title.

Cortland is 26-13 against Buffalo State in the SUNYAC Tournament, and has won three straight postseason tournament games against the Bengals. The Red Dragons won 6-0 to advance to the championship round in 2024, and won the final two games of a tournament series against Buffalo State in 2021 during a COVID-altered format.

The Red Dragons are 7-0 against Fredonia in the conference tournament, which includes a 7-1 win over the Blue Devils to begin last year's tournament.

Cortland is 13-8 against Oneonta at the SUNYAC Tournament all-time, and has won three straight in postseason "Battles of the Red Dragons" dating back to 2018.

Cortland is 14-3 against Plattsburgh in the postseason, with six straight wins. Plattsburgh has not beaten Cortland in the SUNYAC Tournament since 2012.

New Paltz is looking for back-to-back titles this year after winning the championship for the first time last season. Buffalo State is in search of a fifth team championship, and first since 2009. Fredonia is looking for its first SUNYAC title all-time, while Oneonta has won four team championships, but has not won a title since 2014. Plattsburgh has won two conference titles, most recently in 2012.

THIS YEAR AGAINST TOURNAMENT TEAMS… Cortland went 8-2 in games against New Paltz, Buffalo State, Fredonia, Oneonta, and Plattsburgh during the regular season, splitting series on the road at New Paltz and Buffalo State, and sweeping Fredonia, Oneonta, and Plattsburgh. Only the two wins over Plattsburgh were home games for Cortland, but they were actually played at Onondaga Community College due to weather and field conditions last weekend.

Against New Paltz, Cortland's McKenna Barry (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) tossed a four-hit shutout as the Red Dragons earned a 6-0 victory in the first game. New Paltz's Leah Gunsett tossed her own four-hitter in the second game, and although Cortland scratched across one run, the Hawks were able to hold on for a 2-1 win to pick up a split.

Buffalo State won the opening game of the doubleheader against Cortland by a 10-4 score, taking advantage of four Cortland errors to score six unearned runs. The Red Dragons rebounded with a 3-2 win in nine innings in the nightcap, as Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth and Gianna Endieveri (Glens Falls) pitched all nine innings for the win.
Cortland won both games of a doubleheader against Fredonia, but in completely different ways. In game one, the Red Dragons scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning, and held on for a 1-0 victory thanks to a combined shutout from Barry and Endieveri. In the second game, Kayla Pendergast (West Hempstead) and Laila Smith (Guilderland) each hit their first collegiate home runs, and Halle Wright (Ballston Spa) finished just a homer shy of the cycle in an 11-2 victory.

In the opening game against Oneonta, Cortland recorded 20 hits in the game the first time since 2021 that Cortland accomplished that feat. After failing to score in the top of the first inning and falling behind 3-0, Cortland scored in every inning the rest of the way for an 18-7 win. In game two, Cortland led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, before Oneonta was able to score three runs and bring the tying run to the plate with nobody out. Molly Farley (Goshen/Chester Academy) came on to pitch, and recorded the final three outs for the save and secure the doubleheader sweep.

In Cortland's sweep of Plattsburgh to close the regular season, Barry tossed a shutout to secure an 8-0 victory in six innings in the opening game. Endieveri allowed only an unearned run in the top of the first inning, and kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. Meanwhile, the Cortland offense scored a run in the first, two in both the second and third innings, and completed the scoring with a run in the fifth after a leadoff double by Maggie Cummings (Holland Patent) and an RBI single by Shelby LaMont (Amsterdam) for a 6-1 win.

THE CORTLAND CAPSULE… Cortland began the season with a 2-5 record in the opening seven games of THE Spring Games in Clermont and Leesburg, Fla. The Red Dragons won the final two games of the trip to return to New York at 4-7.

After dropping to 4-14 on the year with seven straight defeats, Cortland began SUNYAC play with eight straight wins to bring the Red Dragons near the .500 mark. Cortland closed the regular season with an 8-2 record in the final 10 games, with the only blemishes coming in the doubleheader splits against Buffalo State and New Paltz.

The Red Dragons enter the postseason with a 20-16 record (16-2 SUNYAC), having reached the 20-win mark for the 28th consecutive full season. McKenna Barry finished off the regular season with three consecutive shutouts, lowering her season ERA to 2.47. Gianna Endieveri is sporting a 2.27 ERA with 73 strikeouts to make a very strong starting rotation heading into the conference tournament.

Cortland is batting .318 as a team, the top mark of any team in the SUNYAC. Both Halle Wright and Maggie Cummings are batting over .400 for the season. Wright is second in the conference with a .409 average, and Cummings is third with a .405 average. Kaeli McAnally (Islip) is tied for fourth in the conference with a .396 batting average, and Barry is eighth with a .381 average.

Wright leads Cortland with 13 extra-base hits on eight doubles, three triples, and two home runs. She also has the second-most RBI in the conference with 33, while Shannon Scott is tied for sixth with 23 RBI.

SHE'S GOT WHEELS… In the second game of a doubleheader split against Buffalo State, Lainie Ornstein stole the 50th base of her career to become the third player in program history to reach 50 steals. Ornstein now has 51 career steals, while Donnalyn Cross is the career leader with 70 stolen bases from 2008-11.

NO-HITTER… Gianna Endieveri tossed a no-hitter over five innings in an 9-0 victory over Oswego on April 14th. It was the first no-hitter for Cortland since Courtney Kane pitched two no-hitters in the 2021 season.

WE'VE GOT ICE… Cortland batters have been hit by pitches 34 times this season, more than any other team in the conference and the 11th-most batters hit by pitch in the nation. Maggie Cummings has been plunked 13 times this season to lead the team, a mark (literally) that is ninth in the nation, while Julz Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) has been hit six times.

SCORE AND SCORE SOME MORE… Cortland leads the conference in scoring offense, averaging 6.74 runs per game. In SUNYAC action, the Red Dragons have scored 152 runs in 18 games, an average of 8.44 runs per game in league play.

CROSSING THE PLATE… Halle Wright has 43 runs scored this season, and has scored at least one run in 26 out of her 34 games played. When Wright scores at least one run, Cortland has a 19-7 record in those games.

SUNYAC WEEKLY WINNERS… Cortland has claimed four SUNYAC weekly awards this season. McKenna Barry and Gianna Endieveri were each selected as the SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week once, while Halle Wright and Barry were each selected as SUNYAC Athlete of the Week once.

THE COMPETITORS… Second-seeded New Paltz enters the tournament with a 22-16 overall record (15-3 SUNYAC). The Hawks split doubleheaders against Cortland, Buffalo State, and Fredonia, and swept Oneonta, and Plattsburgh for a 7-3 record in the regular season against SUNYAC Tournament participants. Kelsey O'Brien is leading New Paltz with a .390 batting average, sixth in the conference. She also has six home runs to rank second in the SUNYAC. Teammate Ella Sharrock is third in the SUNYAC with five homers, and is batting .325 on the year.

The Hawks have the best fielding percentage of any team in the conference at .973, which is also the 14th-best mark in the nation. Sydney Waldon and Leah Gunsett are the two winningest pitchers in the conference. Waldon has an 11-7 record with a 2.54 ERA, while Gunsett is 10-8 with a 2.80 ERA. Waldon also leads the conference with 148 strikeouts.

Buffalo State is the third seed in the conference tournament after finishing the regular season with a 20-16 overall record (14-4 SUNYAC). The Bengals posted a 7-3 record against potential conference tournament opponents, splitting doubleheaders against Cortland, New Paltz, and Fredonia, while sweeping Oneonta and Plattsburgh. Madison Lucas has been the top hitter for Buffalo State, with a .383 batting average that is seventh in the SUNYAC. Ella Stewart is second in average for the Bengals at .337 for the season, while Izzy Pezdek leads Buffalo State with four home runs.

Lucas and Pezdek are also Buffalo State's top two pitchers. Pezdek is 9-6 with a 1.95 ERA on the year. Her nine wins are tied for third in the SUNYAC, while her 1.95 ERA is second in the conference. Lucas is 6-6 on the year, and is sporting a 2.44 ERA that ranks fourth in the conference.

Fredonia enters the SUNYAC Tournament with a 13-17 overall record (10-6 SUNYAC) and is the fourth seed. The Blue Devils split doubleheaders against New Paltz, Buffalo State, and Plattsburgh, and were swept by Cortland. They have a 3-5 record in the regular season against the teams in the SUNYAC Tournament, as their doubleheader against Oneonta was canceled due to weather and since it did not have any bearing on tournament matchups.

Fredonia is led by Kendall Phillips, who has a 0.94 ERA and an 8-5 record over 89.0 innings. Her ERA is the best in the SUNYAC, and has the third-most strikeouts in the conference with 116. Fredonia has four qualified hitters batting over .300 on the year. Madison Lowe has the top average on the team at .361, while Avery Hill is batting .352 with a team high 23 RBI. Allie Wandell has scored 19 runs to lead the Blue Devils, and is batting .337, while Madison Devore is hitting .302 on the year.

Fifth-seeded Oneonta sits at 17-17 overall (10-6 SUNYAC) on the year. The Red Dragons have gone 2-6 against the other qualifiers for the SUNYAC Tournament during the regular season. Oneonta swept Plattsburgh, but was swept by Cortland, New Paltz, and Buffalo State. The doubleheader against Fredonia was canceled due to weather, and since it did not have any bearing on tournament matchups.

Julia Serena is the top hitter for Oneonta, and the top hitter in the conference. She is batting .450 on the season to lead the SUNYAC, and also leads the conference with eight home runs, a .523 on-base percentage, and 35 RBI. Ava Thys is batting .362 on the season, while Emily Brown has a .360 batting average, 10 doubles, and 26 RBI. Tanner Smith is the top player in the circle for Oneonta, registering a 7-4 record with a 2.59 ERA that is seventh in the conference.

Plattsburgh enters the SUNYAC Tournament with a 10-25 overall record (7-11 SUNYAC). The Cardinals went 1-9 during the regular season against teams that qualified for the SUNYAC Tournament, splitting a doubleheader against Fredonia but being swept by Cortland, New Paltz, Buffalo State, and Oneonta.

Carly Gemmett is the top pitcher for Plattsburgh, tossing 110.1 innings with a 3.87 ERA that is 11th in the SUNYAC. Her 139 strikeouts are also second in the conference.
