Early Lead Doesn't Hold Up in 3-1 Loss at Haverford

HAVERFORD, PA. – Haverford College scored three goals over a 14-minute span covering the second and third quarters to erase a 1-0 deficit and the host Fords defeated nationally 12th-ranked Cortland, 3-1, in non-league field hockey action.

Haverford improved to 3-0 with the victory. Cortland dropped to 2-1, with all three of its games to date away from home. The Red Dragons play at 20th-ranked Ithaca Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Adrienne Mayes (Vestal) gave Cortland the lead 1:35 into the second quarter on a penalty stroke. Haverford answered almost seven minutes later on an unassisted goal by Holly Vincent and the teams entered halftime tied 1-1.

Haverford struck quickly in the second half to take the lead when Erica Pardon scored on a pass from Vincent just 33 seconds into the third quarter. Louisa Coughlin added an insurance goal with eight minutes left in the third, assisted by Kendall Fleet.

Haverford outshot Cortland, 21-14, and held an 11-9 edge in penalty corners. Emma Morgan (Whitney Point) started in goal for the Red Dragons and made eight saves in 45:41 of action. Sofia Cannistraci (Guilderland) played the final 14:19 and made two saves while not allowing any goals. Haverford goalkeeper Steph Ionescu made four saves for the victory.
