Red Dragons Fall in Final Seconds of OT to Plattsburgh, 3-2

CORTLAND, NY – Joshua Belgrave scored with 6.6 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Plattsburgh to a 3-2 victory over Cortland in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's hockey contest on Friday evening in Alumni Arena.

The Red Dragons drop to 9-9-1 (6-5-1 SUNYAC), while the Cardinals improve to 9-10-0 (5-7-0 SUNYAC). Plattsburgh earned the regular-season sweep over Cortland, with both games finishing with 3-2 final scores in overtime.

Jack Martin (Scotia/Seacoast Spartans) and Matthew DeSpirt (Hamburg/Northeast Generals) each tallied a goal for the Red Dragons. Shane Shelest (Pointe-Claire, QC/Wellington Dukes) made 27 saves in goal in a losing effort for Cortland.

Beau Lane stopped 35 shots for Plattsburgh, while Jake Sacratini scored a pair of goals for the Cardinals. Quinn Tavares also chipped in two assists for the road team.

Cortland scored twice in the first 3:05 of the first period to take an early 2-0 lead.

On just the second shot on goal of the game for the Red Dragons, Martin found the back of the net on a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle after a feed from along the right boards from Stephen Kyrkostas (Selden/Johnstown Tomahawks). Andrew Clouden (Hamburg/Seacoast Spartans) was credited with the secondary assist as Cortland led 1-0 after 1:56.

Just over a minute later, DeSpirt recorded his second goal of the year, as his centering pass from the left faceoff circle deflected off the stick of a Plattsburgh defender and past Lane. Morley Phillips (Raleigh, NC/Amarillo Wranglers) and Garrett Krieger (Skaneateles/Utica Jr. Comets) each provided the assists on the goal.

Plattsburgh got on the board with just over four minutes left in the frame on Sacratini's first goal of the game after a feed from below the goal line from Tavares.

Plattsburgh received a five-minute for boarding and the Red Dragons committed a minor penalty for roughing with 3:34 left in the period, and Plattsburgh took advantage of the 4-on-4 play to tie the game heading into the intermission, as Sacratini netted his second goal of the game from in front of goal.

The game remained tied through the next two periods, with Cortland holding an 18-5 edge in shots on goal in the second period, while Plattsburgh finished the third period outshooting Cortland by an 11-5 margin in the third period.

In the final minute of the second period, Cortland was assessed a five-minute boarding penalty, and was on the penalty kill for the first 4:37 on the final frame. The Red Dragon defense held firm, with Shelest making three saves to deny Plattsburgh's extended power play.

With five minutes remaining in the third period, Shelest was called into action to make a tremendous pad save to stop the Cardinals on a breakaway. Just a minute later, Nate Boak (Canton/El Paso Rhinos) broke up a 2-on-1 chance for Plattsburgh with a strong defensive play.

Cortland had to successfully kill off another minor penalty in the final three minutes of the game to send the game to overtime.

Cortland had its best opportunity to win the game midway through overtime, as Charlie Merkley (Fairport/Corpus Christi IceRays) was stopped by a pad save from Lane, and another shot went just wide seconds later.

After Shelest made a pair of saves in quick succession on Tavares with a minute left in overtime, Belgrave found himself alone in front of goal after a scramble for the puck in the corner, and beat Shelest with a shot into the right corner for the winner in the final seconds.
