Cortland Finishes 2-1 at Home Quad Meet; Tommy Prairie Reaches Career 100-Win Mark

Cortland honored its seniors prior to the competition
CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland wrestling team finished 2-1, including the 100th career dual win for head coach Tommy Prairie, in a quad meet hosted by the Red Dragons. Cortland (4-4) opened with a 38-15 win over Delaware Valley, lost to nationally fourth-ranked The College of New Jersey, 37-13, and defeated Oswego, 31-19.
 
The win over Delaware Valley gave Prairie the 100th dual win of his head coaching career, which includes 19 victories at Cortland along with 47 at Washington & Jefferson and 34 at Plymouth State.

Cortland picked up seven match wins in its victory over Delaware Valley. The Aggies won the opening match by pin, but the Red Dragons responded with a Rocco Futia (Wallkill) forfeit win at 133 pounds, pins by Culley Bellino (Canastota) in 1:02 at 141 and Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) in 2:10 at 149, and a Colton Havens (Canisteo/Canisteo-Greenwood) forfeit win at 157, to go up 24-6.
 
Cortland's other wins versus Delaware Valley were a 6-3 decision by Robby Cunningham (Miller Place) at 174, an Ethan Gallo (Minisink/Minisink Valley) forfeit win at 197, and a Chris Ayala (Brentwood) technical fall, 18-3, at 285.
 
Cortland trailed 10-0 to TCNJ before picking up a Bellino pin at 141, a Centrone 11-3 major decision at 149, and a Havens sudden-victory 4-1 win at 157, to take a 13-10 lead. The Lions, however won the final five matches.
 
In the final match of the day, Cortland went up 11-0 after two bouts as Wyatt Gentzel (Bellport) pinned his opponent in 39 seconds at 125 and Futia won by a 24-5 technical fall at 133. After Oswego earned a pin, Centrone posted a 21-5 technical fall at 149 to give the Red Dragons a 16-6 advantage.
 
Oswego came back with a pin and a decision to cut Cortland's lead to 16-15. Tristan Robinson-July (Ossining) preserved Cortland's lead with a 10-5 win at 174, but the Lakers tied the match at 19-19 with a major decision at 184. Cortland secured the win with pins in its final two matches - by Gallo in 3:22 at 197 and by Ayala in 6:29 at 285.
 
Cortland recognized its senior class prior to the start of the quad meet. The Red Dragon seniors this season are: Nick Aldino (Wantagh); Jackson Campbell (East Northport/Northport); Centrone; Oscar De Avila (Long Beach); Gentzel; Nolan Jackson (Elbridge/Jordan-Elbridge); Justin Klein (Miller Place); Max Kochergin (Sloatsburg/Suffern); Christian Lievano (East Setauket/Ward Melville); Christian Paredes (Bohemia/Connetquot); Dom Vinci (Spencerport); Joseph Visciano (Smithtown/Smithtown East); Shane Walczyk (Eden); Jared Weinhaus (Holbrook/Sachem East); and Cole Wheet (Ilion/Central Valley Academy).
 
Cortland returns to action on Wed., Feb. 11, when it hosts nationally 23rd-ranked Ithaca in a 7 p.m. dual meet.
